Fernando Álvez , full name Fernando Harry Álvez Mosquera , (born September 4, 1959 in Montevideo ) is a former Uruguayan football player and active coach.

Player career

The goalkeeper played at club level from 1976 to 1984 in the Uruguayan Primera División . After he was under contract with Defensor from 1976 to 1977 , he moved from there to Peñarol within Montevideo for the next six years . There he was able to celebrate his greatest career success in club football by winning the Copa Libertadores and the World Cup in 1982 , even if he was not the first goalkeeper in the club at that time. He then went to Paraguay in 1984 , where he joined the Club Libertad , which was then coached by Sergio Markarian . In the two following years again for Peñarol on the ball, he completed five games in 1987 for the Colombian club Independiente Santa Fe . But he moved to the Brazilian club Botafogo that same year . In 1988 he returned to Peñarol for three years, after which he changed in 1991 with a move to Independiente Medellín . The Torneo Apertura and the Torneo Clausura of 1992 he spent in ranks Deportivo Mandiyús . During this time he was on the pitch 35 times for the Argentines. CA San Lorenzo de Almagro was his employer in both Apertura 1995 and Clausura 1996. However, only one outing for him in the first phase of the season is recorded here. For Apertura 1997 he returned to Peñarol again. There he won his fifth Uruguayan championship title after 1978, 1979, 1981 and 1982.

National team

Álvez was a member of the Uruguayan national youth team , which took part in the U-20 South American Championship in Venezuela in 1977 and won the title. During the tournament he was used by trainer Raúl Bentancor seven times. In the same year he finished fourth with the team at the 1977 Junior World Cup . Two years later he repeated the South American Championship triumph with the Celeste at the U-20 South American Championship in 1979 . He contributed to this with six missions. He also came third in the 1979 World Junior Cup . He was also a member of his home country's senior team . As a substitute goalkeeper behind Rodolfo Rodríguez , he was part of the winning squad of Mundialito . He took part in the Soccer World Cup in Mexico in 1986 and in the 1990 World Cup in Italy as the goalkeeper of Celeste and played all games. He also won the Copa America in 1995 with Uruguay and was also part of the squad at the 1989 and 1991 tournaments. He completed a total of 40 international matches between July 18, 1980 and June 8, 1997.

Coaching career

In 2011 he coached Rocha FC in the Segunda División from October to early December at the latest . In that year he made headlines outside of the actual sporting scene when he was arrested in March during the basketball game Malvín against Biguá in the Palacio Peñarol after a verbal argument with a police officer who blocked his view of the field and other spectators. In November he had a physical argument with Yonny Acosta , Rocha's assistant coach, before the game against Club Atlético Atenas . From March to May 2015 he worked as a coach at Cerro Largo FC . Since June 2016 he has been coaching the second division Miramar Misiones .
