Rodolfo Sergio Rodríguez (* 20th January 1956 in Montevideo ) is a former Uruguayan football - goalkeeper . With 78 official appearances in the national team , he was the record player in his country from 1985 to 2011.

At club level, Rodríguez played first division football in his home country as well as in Brazil and Portugal .

Career

Rodolfo Rodríguez began his career at Club Atlético Cerro . In 1976 he moved to the top club Nacional Montevideo , where he remained under contract until 1983. With Nacional he won three Uruguayan championship titles as well as the Copa Libertadores and the World Cup in 1980 .
This was followed by four years with the Brazilian club FC Santos . In 1988 Rodríguez moved to Europe for Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon , where he played for two seasons. In 1991/92 he ended his career at EC Bahia .

National team

Rodríguez took part with the junior national team at the Junior South American Championship in 1975 and won the title with this team. During the tournament, coach Walter Brienza was used six times. In 1976 Rodríguez was used in the qualifying games for the 1976 Summer Olympics held in Recife , also in the Uruguayan selection that was trained by Walter Brienza at the time. Uruguay finished second behind Brazil in this qualification. However, since, contrary to the regulations of the IOC , which prohibited the participation of professional players, first division players were set up, the National Olympic Committee (COU) and the Uruguayan football association Asociación Uruguaya de Fútbol (AUF) decided to forego the Olympic Games in order to avoid a sanction .

As early as 1976 at the age of 20, Rodríguez made his debut in the Uruguayan senior team, which he led as captain from 1981 to 1983 . He took part in the 1986 World Cup, where he was behind Fernando Álvez only substitute goalkeeper and was not used. He was also in the squad at the Copa America 1979 and Uruguay's Copa 1983 win .
He was also a member of Uruguay's victorious squad at Mundialito in 1980 . Officially, Rodolfo Rodríguez played 78 international matches (69 goals conceded) for Uruguay from his debut on October 6, 1976 until his last appearance on April 21, 1986. Since his 70th international match on February 24, 1985, he was a record international player, he replaced Ángel Romano , who had been a record national player since 1922. Rodríguez remained his country's record international player for 26 years. On July 9, 2011, Diego Forlán set his record and surpassed it on July 13.
