Últimas Noticias ( German Last News ) was a Spanish-language daily newspaper founded in 1981 and distributed nationwide in Uruguay .
It was relocated to Montevideo and belonged to the Grupo Empresarial de la Unificación, the Unification Church , known as the Moon sect, which had established its strongest base in Latin America in Uruguay .
The printing was done by the publisher Polo SA , which also belonged to the Moon sect. It started with an evening edition on September 18, 1981. The main topics were politics, economy, sport and current information. The last editor was Álvaro Giz from 2005 to 2012 . The Uruguayan literary critic Rodolfo Fattoruso was one of the newspaper's former editorialists .
The newspaper was a member of the Asociación de la Prensa Uruguaya (APU), the association of the Uruguayan press. In 2012, the print edition, which was now published as the morning edition, and the web portal were renamed UNoticias . In August 2012, Impresora Polo SA decided to concentrate on the online edition of UNoticias and to give up the print edition. This happened without prior notice, as a result of which 90 of the 165 employees should become unemployed who, together with their union , filled the editorial office in Calle Paysandú and printed the last edition, No. 9222 in the 31st year, on August 23, 2012. The employees of the humorous magazine Guambia , which had appeared as a supplement to Últimas Noticias from 2003, were also affected by the closure .
The website with the domain www.ultimasnoticias.com.uy , which had 500,000 hits a month in 2012, is now offline. The last edition is documented in 2014. The National Library of Uruguay only maintains incomplete holdings of the print edition up to 2010, an online archive of earlier editions is not available.
