Samuel John Stone (born April 25, 1839 in Whitmore , Staffordshire , England , † November 19, 1900 in Charterhouse , Somerset ) was an Anglican clergyman and hymn poet.

Life

Stone received his education from Pembroke College, Oxford . After his ordination as a clergyman, he was first vicar in 1862 , and in 1870 in St. Paul's Church in Haggerston , now part of the London Borough of Hackney . In 1874 he received the position of his father William Stone, who had also worked as a pastor in St. Paul's .

In the Anglican Church he worked successfully as a hymn poet . Of his at least 55 song lyrics, the best known is The Church's one Foundation , which has been translated into several languages, including German in 1898 by Anna Thekla von Weling ( The Church is founded ). The song with the melody of Samuel Sebastian Wesley has been included in the Evangelical Hymnbook under No. 264 and in the Catholic Praise of God ( ö-Lied ) under No. 482 .
