Samuel Sebastian Wesley
Samuel Sebastian Wesley (born August 14, 1810 in London , † April 19, 1876 in Gloucester ) was an English organist, choir director and composer.
Life
Samuel Sebastian Wesley was a son of the organist and composer Samuel Wesley from his illegitimate association with his domestic servant Sarah Suter and a grandson of Charles Wesley . He received his livelihood, school and musical training from the age of 7 as a member of the Chapel Royal . In 1829 he became a pianist and choirmaster at the Adelphi Theater . From 1832 he was organist and choirmaster at major Anglican churches and cathedrals : Hereford , Exeter , Leeds , Winchester and from 1865 until his death at Gloucester Cathedral . His grave is in St. Bartholomew Cemetery in Exeter, where his daughter Mary, who died as a child, was buried in 1840 .
As a church musician and church composer, he achieved fame in his time and is still valued today. Some of his song melodies became popular. His melody was found in German hymn books, Samuel John Stones The Church's one Foundation entrance ( Evangelisches Gesangbuch 264, Gotteslob 482).
