Nadja is a Canadian drone doom band that was founded in 2003 as a solo project by Aidan Baker .
history
Aidan Baker founded Nadja with the intention of combining his mostly experimental ambient music with metal and noise . Leah Buckareff joined the band in 2005, which, according to Baker, gave Nadja the opportunity to perform live.
After various very limited CD-R releases on various small labels, the first official studio album Truth Becomes Death was released in 2005 . Since then, Nadja has released a variety of albums, EPs and split releases. You have appeared internationally with artists such as Kayo Dot , Francisco López and Isis .

Nadja mainly play drone doom with elements of shoegazing and ambient which indulge in deep soundscapes . André Bohnensack from Ox-Fanzine also hears metal , hardcore punk , noise and industrial . To describe the style, Baker himself created terms such as "Ambient Metal", "Shoegazer Metal", "Ambient Doom" and "Dreamsludge". Baker explains Nadja's approach as an idea close to ambient and noise of creating music from noises perceived as noise.
"The rudimentary noises, the noise that you can create with a guitar, something that you don't perceive as music, can be transformed into music through electronic manipulation, loops and effects."
As inspiration, he names post-metal artists such as Godflesh and Neurosis , the avant-garde music projects Swans and Coil and the representatives of the shoegazing Flying Saucer Attack and My Bloody Valentine .
Surname
The band name is derived from Baker's first name "Aidan" read backwards, for which he swapped the i for a j, which resulted in the name, which Baker understands as an allusion to André Breton's novel Nadja and the vampire film of the same name with Elina Löwensohn .
