A Storm of Light is a post-metal band formed in 2008 .

history

The Tombs- bassist Domenic Seita and the Red-Sparowes- and Battle-of-MICE guitarist Josh Graham founded A Storm of Light in 2008 with the Swans -Schlagzeuger Vinnie Signorelli. In addition to the guitar, Graham took on the role of keyboardist and singer. As he was in close contact with Neurot Recordings through his work as a lighting designer for Neurosis and the previous band projects A Storm of Light , Graham secured the band a first recording contract. The debut album And We Wept the Black Ocean Within was released in the year it was founded . The album received positive international feedback. In the same year, the group performed at Brutal Assault in the Czech Republic and at Pukkelpop in Belgium, as part of a European tour that was the opening act for Neurosis.

The following year the split EP Primitive North was released with the drone-doom project Nadja via Robotic Empire , as well as the second album Forgive Us Our Trespasses , which was again released via Neurot Recordings and received international attention. Forgive Us Our Trespasses was recorded with two drummers and guest musicians such as Jarboe and Lydia Lunch . Pete Ange Vice by Satanized played drums in parallel with Andy Rice. Signorelli was no longer represented on the album. Joel Hamilton from Battle of Mice joined the team as a keyboardist. The album was received positively to exuberantly. The Webzine Metal Ireland named Forgive Us Our Trespasses album of the month in September 2009. The publication was followed by another European tour, including an appearance at the Roadburn Festival . A Storm of Light played the tour with Minsk as co-headliner.

After further touring activities, the group released a limited and experimental EP in 2011 via Latitudes, a sub-label of Southern Lord , the EP is mostly referred to as the Latitudes Session , but is considered unnamed. In the same year, the third studio album As the Valley of Death Becomes Us, Our Silver Memories Fade, was released via Profound Lore Records . Graham explained the label change as a commercial decision. The cooperation with other labels enables the group and both labels to develop new audience groups. In this context Profound Lore, as a company with “great artists”, was Graham's first choice. Several guest musicians were again involved in the recordings of As the Valley of Death Becomes Us, Our Silver Memories Fade , including Jarboe and Kris Force from Amber Asylum , Kim Thayil from Soundgarden and Matthias Bossi from The Book of Knots . Meanwhile, Rice and Angevice had left as band members. A Storm of Light was completed in their stead by Generation of Vipers' drummer BJ Graves . Due to stylistic changes, the album was mostly, but no longer consistently, positively discussed. Following the release, A Storm of Light made international tours. In the USA in 2012 with Corrosion of Conformity , Converge and Touché Amoré , among others , in Europe in 2011 with Ghost Brigade and Intronaut .

With the live album 03 03 2012 Cleveland and the EP Violitionist Sessions followed small releases that received little attention. In the meantime, Andrea Black from Howl had joined the group. In 2013, Nations to Flames was released on Southern Lord's fourth studio album. With the repeated participation of various guest musicians, Nations to Flames was received as the group's toughest album. Critics praised the album as a particularly organic and creative development of the band.

style

The music of A Storm of Light is classified as post-metal. Mostly, comparisons with Neurosis and Red Sparowes are tried to outline the style of the group. With later publications, reviewers increasingly named other influences, including Black Sabbath , Queens of the Stone Age and Tool .

Despite nuanced changes in style, the music has a constant basic concept: "distorted basses, doomy-played death metal guitars and death aesthetics." The drumming is described as "grooving", "massive" and seemingly "tribalistic". Under these constants, however, the style developed from the debut in the Doom Metal spectrum, which was particularly noticeable in the tempo, through As the Valley of Death Becomes Us, Our Silver Memories Fade , to a post-game influenced by Thrash Metal . Metal on Nations to Flames .
