Jarboe

Jarboe (actually Jarboe Deveraux , also The Living Jarboe ) is an American singer, musician and performance artist.

biography

Jarboe was born to FBI staff and grew up in rural Mississippi and New Orleans , Louisiana . Her father worked as an undercover agent and not only slipped into changing roles and disguises for his investigation, but also recorded telephone calls (including those of the family) on tape. Circumstances that, according to his own statement, had an impact on Jarboe's artistic work: Some of the sound recordings were later used on the Swans albums Love of Life and Soundtracks for the Blind . Her father also took care of her musical education, but she could not gain a foothold in the music business.

Before joining Michael Gira's no-wave / rock formation Swans , Jarboe appeared in performances in which she tried to challenge her body to the point of exhaustion. In her late twenties, Jarboe broke her marriage to a successful businessman and moved to New York, where she became a member of the Swans. With the release of the album Children of God in 1987, the Swans incorporated both orchestral and acoustic, sometimes folkloric sounds into their compositions. Jarboe and Gira, at the time also privately linked, continued this tendency in their side project Skin . From 1991, with her debut album Thirteen Masks , Jarboe appeared - in addition to her continued collaboration with the Swans - with solo releases. 1997 Gira released the Swans, and after a small contribution to Jarboes Giras project The Body Lovers / The Body Haters , the two finally went their separate ways. Jarboe did not appear on the Reformed Swans' album My Father Will Guide Me up a Rope to the Sky (2010) because Gira had not asked her to participate.

Jarboe has worked with a wide variety of musicians to date ( Larry Seven , Brian Williams , JG Thirlwell , Joseph Budenholzer from Backworld , Kid Congo Powers , Blixa Bargeld , Neurosis , Attila Csihar , Phil Anselmo and many others), and her musical work is correspondingly heterogeneous, from soft, acoustic sounds to jazz to grunge , noise and metal .

At the same time, Jarboe continues to appear as a performance artist in international galleries and museums. These appearances, which are characterized by their close proximity to the audience and unvarnished, sometimes erotically colored self-exposure, are documented. a. on the LP compilation Nine Underground , the cassette The Walls Are Bleeding , the CD-R My Delicate Beast or the DVD-R Jarboe: compilations , which are distributed exclusively via the artist's website.
