Holy Money is the fourth studio album by the New York band Swans . The album was recorded simultaneously with the EP A Screw and the previousalbum Greed . It is considered one of their most important and influential. On the CD, which was released a short time later, three tracks from the EP A Screw were added tothe original LP. Later re-releases combinethe albums Greed and Cop as well as the EPs Young God and Time is Money (Bastard) in addition to Holy Money and A Screw .

style

Unlike the first two albums Filth and Cop and the EP Young God , Holy Money does not have the brutal, loud sound that was dominated by Norman Westberg's guitar work, and it seems a bit calmer overall. The lyrics, as is so often the case with the Swans, deal with isolation, mental disorders and emotional and sexual addiction.

The album is the first of the band where Jarboe makes a strong appearance. Until the first breakup of the Swans in 1997, she remains a central figure in the band. Three drummers continue to play on the album, which gives the album a very full sound.

reception

The reception of the album was positive. People magazine wrote in 1986:

"On the opening cut of Holy Money, A Hanging, lifeless voices chant in harmony, raising specters of a slave gang in hell as vicious drumbeats and gongs sound like some monstrous taskmaster. Over it all lead singer M. Gira, singing so low and slowly he sounds like he's on the wrong speed, delivers such lyrics as "Dear God in heaven ... I'll hang for you" ... Few bands rival the SWANS when it comes to black humor ... then again, some days you just have to get it out of your system. "

“In the first song of Holy Money , A Hanging , lifeless voices sing in harmony, creating ghosts of a horde of slaves in Hell, while nasty drum beats and gong strikes sound like monstrous taskmasters. Above all, the lead singer M. Gira , singing so deeply and slowly, as if it were being played at the wrong speed. He intones texts like Dear God in heaven… I'll hang for you . [...] Few bands are as black-humored as the SWANS. But sometimes you just want to leave it behind. "

At allmusic , the album was given 4.5 out of 5 stars by critic Ned Raggett. According to him, "Holy Money documents well the Swan's continuous transformation into a more complex, fascinating beast".

Holy Money had a strong influence on the drone doom and sludge scene; Bands like Godflesh , Jesu , Khanate , Sunn O))) and Earth often referred to this album.
