Cop is the second studio album by the New York band Swans .

content

Cop was released in 1984 as an LP on the label K.422 and was released in 1992 on K.422 and on Young God as CD. In the CD version, the newly mastered album was first supplemented by the Young God EP and in 1999 by the albums Greed and Holy Money . All releases contain the note that the album was "designed to be played at maximum volume" .

On Cop, the Swans tightened the style of their debut album Filth (1983) by using an even slower tempo and more loops from old tapes to create an even more aggressive and raw sound. Lyrically, this album also has a political touch: The title track Cop turns in an aggressive and sarcastic way against the violence and feelings of superiority of the police. In the early phase of the Swans, thanks to the extreme volume of their performances, the police broke up and broke up their concerts.

According to Jarboe , who only joined the band on the next album, Greed , the indistinct photo in the middle of the cover shows a close-up of the profile of an extremely overweight woman.

reception

allmusic awarded the album four out of five stars. Forced Exposure magazinepraised the brutal sound of the record in the summer of 1985:

“This record just EXPLODES with an ugly ecstatic animus , enough raw spiritual electricity to keep even the greatest manic-depressive alive and conscious through Christmas AND New Years. I am overwhelmed by it, blown away and fallen on my old bottom by the exquisite / horrific vortex of emotion and acoustic excess. "
