Greed is the third studio album by the New York band Swans and was first released in 1986 on the K.422 label. Greed later appeared as a single CD with the pieces from the EP Time is Money (Bastard) as a bonus, then as a double CD with additional tracks from the albums Holy Money , Cop and the EP Young God .
style
The album is mainly characterized by dark, melodic songs instead of the loud noise rock of the previous albums . Some songs use drum computers , the main instrument in the song Fool is a piano, and Money Is Flesh has a synthesizer . The use of three drummers ensures a very full sound.
This is also the band's first album to feature Jarboe . Until the band split up in 1997, she remained one of the central figures of the band.
reception
On allmusic , Ned Ragett gives the album four out of five points and writes:
" Greed marks the initial turning point of Swans towards more varied and ultimately even more astonishing musical heights than the early records, which were aggressive beyond all words, ever indicated."
“ Greed marks the first turning point for the Swans towards more varied and ultimately even more amazing musical peaks. The earlier records, which were unspeakably aggressive, never indicated this. "
