Godflesh is a British band.

history

Godflesh was founded in Birmingham in 1988 by Justin K. Broadrick and GC Green , who had been making music together since Justin's 14th year. After a few forerunner projects - Broadrick initially played in Fall of Because and Napalm Death and then moved to Head of David - Godflesh was born.

The band was heavily influenced by groups like the Swans , early Killing Joke , Black Sabbath and Throbbing Gristle . Godflesh took up the sluggish noise rock style of Swans and Broadrick's predecessor band Head of David and expanded it to include metal- heavy guitar sounds and elements of post-industrial , which was expressed in particular by the addition of sound and voice effects and a drum computer . Accordingly, Godflesh, with her early works Streetcleaner (1989) and Slavestate (1991), was part of industrial metal . Streetcleaner in particular is considered to be one of the pioneers of the genre.

Each of their albums is very different from the other releases. While you can hear Grindcore influences in older albums , the later works are subject to permanent changes. From the 1992 album Pure , the band largely dispensed with post-industrial elements. Since turning away from industrial metal, she has devoted herself to a style that can be compared with the American sludge sound. From 1996 she experimented more with elements of hip-hop , dub and breakbeat / drum and bass and published the works Songs of Love and Hate , Love and Hate in Dub and Us and Them .

“In our opinion, techno and hip hop is the only modern music that deals with the now, the future and what goes beyond it, while so-called modern rock and pop music is exclusively absorbed by the past. There is hardly any rock left with real brutality. Today I find it more in the hip hop protests, and have been for several years. That's why we also work with drummer Brian Mantia because we wanted that kind of groove for 'Songs of Love and Hate'. "

With the 2001 released album Hymns , she returned to the sludge sounds of the albums Selfless and Pure .

Justin K. Broadrick had many side projects while working with Godflesh, such as B. Final , God, Ice, Techno Animal and the like. a. After the last album and a move to a new record company, Ben Green left the band, and Justin K. Broadrick announced the end of Godflesh in 2002. Broadrick founded the post-metal and post-rock band Jesu before Godflesh died in 2001 . Godflesh have been active again since an appearance at Hellfest in summer 2010.

Especially with their early work, Godflesh influenced numerous other metal / crossover bands, such as Fear Factory , Neurosis , Isis .
