Year of No Light is a French post-metal band founded in 2001 in Bordeaux . The name of the formation, often abbreviated to YONL, goes back to a song by the indie rock band Three Mile Pilot .

history

The formation, founded in 2001, took three years to get a first stable lineup. The singer and keyboardist Julien Perez joined in 2003, while Christophe Mora left the band during this time. Until 2004, Year of No Light worked with this line-up on their first recordings. From the resulting demo - CD-R with hangefertigtem cover 150 copies were published. The positive response to the release motivated the band to continue producing music in a targeted manner. Until the release of the following debut album, YONL participated in two samplers, practiced and played various concerts with just as much success.

In 2006 the debut album Nord , recorded in Geneva , was released , which helped the Year of No Light to international fame and recognition. After the release came across the monarch! -Gitarist Shiran Kaidine in addition to the band, which appeared in the new lineup at the 2008 Roadburn Festival . The gig was released on LP and DVD in 2009 and on CD in 2011.

While the band brought out various split releases in 2009, they separated from their singer and decided not to replace him. The second studio album Ausserwelt was recorded by Year of No Light as a six-member band with two drummers and three guitarists. After the recordings of Ausserwelt , a music promoter friend offered the band the opportunity to recreate a silent film of their choice. Year of No Light opted for the early sound film Vampyr by Carl Theodor Dreyer .

“At that time all of our souls and bodies were busy creating a sonic counterpart to Dreyer's obsession with beauty, love, vengeance, sin, forgiveness, evil, redemption and faith. The premiere took place in the spring of 2010 in Bordeaux. What we had originally only viewed as a one-off undertaking soon developed into a two-year dream trip through Europe by itself. "

- Pierre Anouilh

The last presentation of the film tour was recorded in February 2012 and released the following year. In later conversations, the band members made it clear that the work on this project had had a significant impact on the band's songwriting process and that the 2013 album Tocsin had a huge impact on this.

style

The band is mainly attributed to post-rock and post-metal . The band members admit influences from Neurosis , Isis and Old Man Gloom , but also point to influences from Joy Division , My Bloody Valentine , Black Sabbath and Darkthrone . In reviews, heavy, low-pitched reef outbreaks and long, calm passages are mostly referred to to describe the style. However, the music also shows stylistic influences of Black Metal with blastbeat passages and occasional light, shaky riffs . The former singer's early performance is also seen somewhere between black metal, post metal and sludge . While the band is mostly attributed to metal, the self-image of the musicians is based more on the shoegaze .

"[O] ur ethos is far more shooting-oriented. We are too tired and not tough enough to be a bunch of metalheads in the vein of [...] Isis and Neurosis !! "

“Our ethos is much more oriented towards shoegazing . We're too tired and not tough enough to match a bunch of metalheads like Isis or Neurosis . "
