Aidan Baker (2008)

Aidan Baker (* 1974 in Toronto ) is a Canadian multi-instrumentalist , experimental musician and author.

Background and style

After studying literature and religion at McGill University in Montréal and then attending the Humber College School for Writers in Toronto , Aidan Baker published prose as well as poetry and illustration for various publishers. This was also the time when he began his musical career - initially as a solo musician - which from then on was to be characterized primarily by a very flexible and experimental style that barred itself from being classified in clearly defined musical genres. Instead, Aidan Baker's (especially solo) work shifts seemingly fluently between genres such as space rock , dark jazz , post rock , shoegaze , ambient , drone doom and noise (sometimes even folk and jazz ), whereby all of the styles mentioned are usually in this way mix that a roaring, slowly advancing "" wall "" ( soundscape ) results - a result that has sometimes been described as "Ambient Metal", "Shoegazer Metal", "Ambient Doom" or "Dreamsludge".

As variable in the result, so different are the influences on Aidan Baker's music, including Sonic Youth , Swans , Sunn O))) , Godflesh , PJ Harvey , the Red House Painters , Caspar Brötzmann and James Plotkin as well as those also from Canada ancestral industrial band Skinny Puppy .

Originally with the ulterior motive of using bass amplification to enable studio recordings as well as live performances, Aidan Baker's friend Leah Buckareff joined the Nadja project that he had founded two years earlier in 2005 . Nadja (“Aidan” read backwards, but at the same time alluding to André Breton's novel Nadja and a film of the same name with Elina Löwensohn ) began as a side project with an increased focus on harder or more metal- heavy spheres. However, Baker is active in a number of other projects (ARC & Mnemosyne) and (both studio and tour) collaborations, including with Eric Quach ( thisquietarmy ) and the German drone band Troum .

Aidan Baker and Leah Buckareff live in Berlin today.
