Hereford [ ˈherifəd ] (Welsh: Henffordd ) is a town in western England , near the border with Wales . The city is the bishopric of the Anglican Diocese of Hereford .
location
Hereford is northwest of Gloucester on the River Wye . It has 54,842 inhabitants (as of 2001) and is the administrative seat of the independent administrative unit ( Unitary Authority ) Herefordshire . From 1974 to 1998 the city was part of the now dissolved county of Hereford and Worcester .
economy
The area around Hereford is dominated by agriculture , among other things poultry parts are processed and cattle is farmed, which is why "Hereford" is also the abbreviation for Hereford cattle .
Apples are also grown there and made into cider . HP Bulmer , one of the UK's largest cider producers, is based in Hereford .
There is also a plant for the production of nickel-based alloys , which the Special Metals Corporation belongs.

Since the British Special Air Service (SAS) (comparable to the German Special Forces Command ) is stationed near Hereford , Hereford is often used as a representative of the SAS, especially in military jargon .
