The Special Metals Corporation , based in Huntington , West Virginia , USA , is one of the leading manufacturers of nickel-based alloys . The company has manufacturing facilities at its headquarters and in New Hartford , New York , USA and Hereford , England .

In 1998 the company acquired Inco Alloys International . In 2006 , Special Metals was acquired by Precision Castparts Corporation , based in Portland , Oregon . The location in England goes back to Wiggin Alloys , which Inco came into possession in 1929 .

Well-known brand names include Inconel , Incoloy , Monel , Nimonic , Nimoloy and Brightray , which were taken over from Inco, and Udimet . The industrial production of nickel alloys began in 1906 with the invention of the copper-nickel alloy Monel alloy 400 , for which the metallurgist Ambrose Monell applied for a patent on April 20, 1905. Inco Alloys (International Nickel Company) has been a leader in the development of new nickel alloys.

After the Second World War , sales branches were set up in mainland Europe in Brussels , Rotterdam , Düsseldorf , Paris and Milan . The last remaining branch in Düsseldorf was closed at the end of 2019.
