Monel
Monel ( material number 2.4360, UNS N 04400, Alloy 400, Nicorros), and Monel metal , named after Ambrose Monell († 1921), is a nickel - copper - alloy .
composition
Monel is made up of approximately 65% nickel , 33% copper and 2% iron with high tensile strength . It is very resistant to atmospheric corrosion , sea water and a wide variety of acids and alkaline solutions . The name Monel is a protected brand name of the Special Metals Corporation , Huntington (West Virginia) , USA . The material is considered a forerunner of stainless steel and is still in use today.
application
Monel is used in ship technology , for turbine construction , for equipment in the chemical and hydrocarbon industries , for valves , pumps and heat exchangers . It is remarkably stable towards the aggressive fluorine F 2 (passivation of the Monel surface by fluorination) and is therefore used as a material for F 2 storage vessels (pressurized gas bottles).
Due to its high nickel content, Monel is also characterized by an excellent electromagnetic shielding effect . This is why it is often used in EMC technology in the form of fabric hoses as a shield material for electrical cables. Monel is also frequently used in reactors, pipelines and valves in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. In addition to other nickel-based alloys, GRP components with a chemically resistant lining, e.g. B. made of perfluoroalkoxy polymers (PFA) are lined. Since Monel can also be soldered very well , it is sometimes used to change the Perinet valves ("Monel valves") for brass instruments.
The material is increasingly used due to its resistance to skin sweat
- in eyewear production as eyeglass wire.
- for marking animals ( ear tags from Monel, so-called monel tags ).
- For wrapping plucked instruments - strings , especially for electric bass and electric guitar ("Monel strings").
K-Monel
In addition to the classic Monel, there is also the hardenable K-Monel (material no. 2.4375 / (2.4374 - Aerospace applications only), UNS N 05500, Alloy K-500, Nicorros Al). Aluminum is added to this material . The material can be hardened through a special heat treatment . A considerable increase in strength can be achieved through precipitation hardening . This alloy is processed into pump shafts in oil pumps , for example .
