The final round of the FIFA Women's World Cup 2007 was the fifth playout of the most important tournament for women's football - teams and was on 10 to 30 September 2007 for the second time in 1991 in China held. China was originally intended to host the 2003 World Cup . Following the outbreak of SARS lung disease in East Asia, the FIFA Executive Committee decided in May 2003 to move the tournament to the USA . The World Cup games were played in five stadiums in five different Chinese cities. The opening game and the final took place in Shanghai.

qualification

China was already automatically qualified for the tournament as host. The remaining 15 places in the final round were determined between June 2005 and May 2007. With the exception of the UEFA zone, the respective continental championships were also the qualifying tournament for the World Cup.

UEFA provides five teams for the final tournament. The participants were determined in a qualification phase that started on July 9, 2005 and ended on September 30, 2006. The 25 teams in category A were divided into five groups of 5 teams each, with the five group winners qualifying for the final round. Norway bought their first European ticket on August 27, 2006. Sweden followed on September 24, and three days later the reigning world champions Germany and Denmark also qualified for the finals. England secured their last ticket against France on September 30, 2006 . The teams in category B only played for promotion to the A category.

The South American football association CONMEBOL had two starting places. They were awarded at the Sudamericano Femenino 2006 , which was held from November 10th to 26th, 2006 in Mar del Plata , Argentina . Argentina surprisingly won the tournament ahead of Brazil . Both teams qualified for the finals.

The two North American participants were determined at the 2006 CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup in the United States . The tournament took place from November 19 to 30, 2006 in Carson and Miami . The winner was the US team before Canada . The third-placed Mexicans played against the Asian fourth Japan for another starting place, but failed in the play-off games.

The African Championship for Women was held from October 28th to November 11th 2006 in Nigeria. The hosts' team prevailed against Ghana in the final . Both teams represented the African Football Association at the World Cup.

Placements of the participants

The Asian Women's Championship took place in Australia in July 2006. In addition to the Chinese who qualified as World Cup organizers, who secured the title of Asian champions by beating the hosts, the Australians and the third-placed North Koreans also qualified for the finals. As in 2003, Japan prevailed against Mexico (2-0 and 1-2) in the play-off games.

Oceania has a direct starting place that was awarded at the Oceanic Women's Football Championship in April 2007. New Zealand defeated Papua New Guinea 7-0 and secured their ticket to the World Cup.

draw

The draw took place on April 22, 2007 in Wuhan . The ceremony was held at the Guanggu Science and Technology Palace. For the draw, the 16 qualified teams were divided into five pots. The allocation was based on a decision by FIFA the day before, based on sporting and geographical aspects. The aim of the division was to ensure that, with the exception of UEFA, no more than one team per continental association was drawn into a group in the preliminary round. As UEFA provided five participants, this could not be avoided for the European continental association.

As early as October 16, 2006, FIFA stipulated that host China and defending champions Germany would be included in the draw, and that Germany, as the reigning world champions, would be allowed to play the opening game. On April 13, 2007 FIFA selected Germany (Group A), the USA (Group B), Norway (Group C) and China (Group D) as group heads.

The five pots finally contained the following teams:

• Pot 3: Denmark, England, Sweden
• Pot 4: Argentina, Ghana, New Zealand, Nigeria

The draw brought with it some curiosities. Group B is identical to Group A of the 2003 World Cup. Nigeria , North Korea and the USA met in a preliminary group at the 1999 World Cup. Argentina , Germany and Japan from group A already played in a preliminary group at the 2003 World Cup.

Preliminary round

The preliminary round was held in four groups with four teams each. Within each group, each team played exactly once against each other team. The first two teams qualified for the quarter-finals. The placement of the teams in the preliminary round groups resulted in the following order:

1. Number of points (win: three points; tie: one point; defeat: zero points),
2. in the event of a tie, goal difference from all three games;
3. if the goal difference is the same, the number of goals scored in all three games;
4. with the same number of goals scored in all three games, the number of points in a direct comparison of the teams with the same points;
5. with the same number of points in a direct comparison, the goal difference in a direct comparison;
6. with the same goal difference in direct comparison, the number of goals scored in direct comparison;
7. Fair play rating, based on the number of yellow and red cards;
8. the lot.

Defending champions Germany opened the tournament with an 11-0 win over Argentina. This was the highest victory in World Cup history to date. However, the envy eleven could not take the momentum of the first game with them. After a goalless draw against England and a job win against Japan, the group win was wrapped up. The English selection came in second in the group. At the opening there was a draw against Japan, with the English women leading well into stoppage time. Hope Powell's team secured their place in the quarter-finals with an undisputed 6-1 win against Argentina. The Japanese were left behind. They were extremely happy to win a 1-0 win over Argentina and had to return home after their final defeat against Germany. Last was the reigning South American champion Argentina. In the game against Germany, the team presented itself quite overwhelmed and set a new negative record for the World Cup with 18 goals conceded in the preliminary round.

Even after the draw, group B was referred to as the “death group”. At the start, the secret favorite North Korea caused a sensation with their 2-2 draw against the USA. Sweden couldn't get past a 1-1 draw against Nigeria. The USA team secured victory in the group with less than brilliant wins against Sweden and Nigeria. In spite of the 2-1 defeat in the last game against Sweden, North Korea's selection, which made it into the round of eight for the first time, came in second. Disappointment, however, with the "Tre Kronor", who had to retire so early for the first time after the preliminary round and as the first reigning vice world champion. Last was Africa champions Nigeria, who presented themselves stronger than four years ago, but still only managed to score one point.

As expected, Norway won Group C. After a narrow win against Canada and a surprising draw against Australia, the Norwegians secured first place with a 7-2 victory over Ghana. The "Matildas" from Australia came in surprisingly second. In the direct duel against Canada on the last day of the match it was all about second place. In added time, Cheryl Salisbury scored the equalizer to make it 2-2 and sent the Canadians back home. The Ghanaians found themselves in last place, having to return home with three clear defeats in their luggage.

The Brazilian side shone in Group D and secured group victory with two clear wins, including a 4-0 win over the hosts and a lucky 1-0 win against Denmark. Good luck with the Chinese selection. The “Stahlrosen” lost a 2-0 lead against Denmark, but still managed to win. After the defeat against Brazil, a 2-0 win against the already eliminated New Zealanders was enough for second place. Third place went to Denmark, who brought serious allegations of spying against the hosts after their game against China. Coach Heiner-Møller has been banned from FIFA for four games for disciplinary reasons. The return of New Zealand to the World Cup stage was without a goal.

The defending champion from Germany and the secret favorite from North Korea fought an exciting game with chances on both sides in the first half. Just before half-time, Kerstin Garefrekes put the Germans in the lead. In the second half, North Korea made more pressure, but the goals fell for the German team. The English women were able to keep the game goalless for one half against the favored Americans. A strong quarter of an hour after the restart was enough for the Americans to reach the semifinals of their fifth World Cup participation. Host China, meanwhile, failed due to their own weaknesses. The Chinese created many chances against Norway, but remained without a goal. Isabell Herlovsen did better on the other side and scored the winning goal. Brazil quickly took a 2-0 lead in the last quarter-finals. But the surprise team from Australia equalized with two goals. A quarter of an hour before the end, however, Cristiane made the decision for Brazil.

The Norwegians could not take revenge against the German team for the lost European Championship final in 2005 . In the first half, both teams had some good scoring opportunities. An own goal by Trine Rønning just before half-time, however, put the defending champion on the road to victory. After the restart, the German team determined the game. First Kerstin Stegemann increased it to 2: 0, then Martina Müller used a failed back pass from Siri Nordby to make it 3-0.

Before the second semifinal, US coach Greg Ryan caused unrest in his own team with the announcement that he would replace the goalkeeper. Brazil took the lead quickly with an own goal from Leslie Osborne and one from Marta. In the second half, the Americans were partially humiliated. Cristiane and Marta with their seventh tournament goal ensured that the Brazilians made it to the World Cup final for the first time.

In a tactically high-class game, the Americans took the lead 4-0 with two goals from Abby Wambach and a double strike from Lori Chalupny and Heather O'Reilly. Despite the high deficit, the Scandinavians did not give up, but only scored a consolation goal through Ragnhild Gulbrandsen .

For the first time a reigning world champion managed to defend his title. In a high-class game, Brazil initially gained field advantages, but failed with the shots on goal at the German goalkeeper Nadine Angerer or the post. The German team was not always able to convince in preparation for the tournament. The low point was the Algarve Cup in March, in which the German team only finished eighth. In the European Championship qualifiers, the German team was able to achieve clear victories against second-rate opponents, but only came to a 2-2 draw in the last friendly against Norway. During the World Cup finals, the team was able to improve significantly from game to game, from the quarterfinals onwards. Marta (Brazil)

adidas Golden Ball

The Brazilian Marta was awarded the golden ball as the best player of the tournament. In the vote, she received 51 percent of the votes cast by the accredited sports journalists. The silver ball went to the German captain Birgit Prinz , who won 17 percent of the vote. The bronze ball also went to Brazil. The former Bundesliga player Cristiane received it with 11 percent of the vote.

adidas Golden Shoe

The Brazilian Marta was not only voted the best player, but was also the top scorer of the tournament with 7 goals and 2 assists . For this she received the golden shoe . The silver shoe went to the American Abby Wambach with 6 goals and one template. The Norwegian Ragnhild Gulbrandsen also scored 6 goals and received the bronze shoe . Since both had scored six goals each, the number of assists decided the ranking.

FIFA Fair Play Award

The Norwegian team won the fair play competition for the first time . Only four Norwegian players saw the yellow card during the tournament . Two teams each received only two or three yellow cards, but only those teams that reached at least the quarter-finals were considered for the fair play rating.

Most entertaining team

The trophy for the most entertaining team , awarded for the first time, went to Brazil with 42.12 percent of the vote .

Referees

FIFA selected 14 referees and 22 assistant referees for the 32 games of the World Cup . The candidates have been observed since 2005 and went through a number of training camps. In January and May 2007, the final courses took place on the Canary Islands and at FIFA headquarters in Zurich . Based on the results, a list of 42 candidates was drawn up, six of which failed the fitness test. The Oceanic Confederation did not provide any officials, but the US sent two referees to China.

In contrast to the Men's World Cup , the officials in a match are not from the same country or confederation. FIFA justified this with the low number of female referees (in Germany, for example, only two percent). The officials are put together in such a way that smooth communication is possible and language problems are avoided where possible.

The officials were housed together in a hotel in Shanghai . In addition to the training, the referees took part in training courses in which a. Recordings of games played were shown. Australian referee Tammy Ogston chaired the opening game and final .

Bonuses

For the first time, FIFA distributed prizes to the participating associations. The world champion Germany will receive prize money of one million US dollars . The runner-up Brazil receives $ 800,000, the third, the USA, receives $ 650,000. The teams that are eliminated after the preliminary round will each receive $ 200,000.

Media coverage

The World Cup games were broadcast to over 200 states and territories. Compared to the previous World Cup , this is an increase of around 25 percent.

In Germany , all games with German participation were broadcast directly by ARD or ZDF . The ZDF broadcast the preliminary round games against Argentina and England, while the ARD showed the preliminary round game against Japan. The games of the German team in the quarter and semi-finals were broadcast by ARD and the final by ZDF. The broadcaster Eurosport broadcast 25 of the 32 games directly, including all games of the German team as well as the semi-finals and the final.

In 40 European countries, all 32 games could be viewed directly and in full on the FIFA homepage . For legal reasons, viewers from the other countries had to be content with two-minute summaries.

The prices for the tickets were between the equivalent of two and 50 euros . The cards could be purchased internationally by telephone and the Internet . The entry price for the final together with the game for third place was the equivalent of around eight euros.

A total of 1,078,285 spectators saw the 32 World Cup games, which corresponds to an average of 33,696 per game. The number of spectators remained 120,000 below the record level of the 1999 World Cup . Most of the spectators saw the host, the German and the Brazilian team.

At the 2007 World Cup, some new records were again set or improved:

Kristine Lilly (USA) and Bente Nordby (Norway) contested their fifth world championship. The German Birgit Prinz was the first woman in three World Cup finals. Her 1-0 win against Japan made Prinz the sole record scorer in the World Cup . At the 2011 World Cup , the Brazilian Marta was able to catch up with Prinz, both of whom are now leading with 14 goals ahead of Michelle Akers (12 goals), the previous record scorer. In her first two appearances in 1995 and 1999 she scored one goal each, in 2003 she scored seven and now five.

The 11-0 win by the German women against Argentina in their first game was the first double-digit victory ever in a women's soccer World Cup. The men's soccer World Cup has not had a higher result either, the record there dates back to 1982 , when Hungary beat El Salvador 10-1. Germany is the first team that managed to win the world championship title without conceding a goal in the tournament, so the German goalkeeper Nadine Angerer set a record. With the victory over Brazil in the final, Germany is the first team ever to successfully defend its title in women's football.

The youngest player in the World Cup line-up was the North Korean substitute goalkeeper Yun Hyon Hi at the age of 15. However, like her teammates of the same age Ho Un-byol and Yun Song Mi , she was not used during the tournament. The youngest player actually used was 16-year-old New Zealand midfielder Annalie Longo , who came on as a substitute in the 87th minute of her team's second group match. The oldest player in the tournament was striker Wendi Henderson , also from New Zealand , at the age of 36 . Henderson took part in the first World Cup in 1991 .

The last two preliminary round meetings of groups C and D were postponed from September 19 to September 20 due to the typhoon "Wipha".

The Norwegian Ragnhild Gulbrandsen scored the 500th goal in World Cup history in a 7-2 win over Ghana. Martina Müller scored the 100th goal of the tournament in the semifinals for Germany against Norway. For the first time, all knockout games were decided in regular time.

The documentary film The best women in the world about the German team, made during the tournament, was broadcast on January 2, 2008 by ARD .
