The Africa Women Cup of Nations 2006 ( Engl. : African Women Championship , French. : Championnat d'Afrique de football féminin ) was the fifth official playout of the African continental championship in women's football and was held from 30 October to 12 November for the third time held in Nigeria after 1998 and 2002 . The venues were Oleh , Oghara , Ughelli and Warri in the state of Delta . The tournament was originally supposed to take place in Gabon . For financial reasons, however, the Gabonese association decided not to host the event.
Host Nigeria once again made use of their home advantage and became African champions for the seventh time in a row and qualified together with finalist Ghana for the 2007 Women's World Cup in China.
The eight qualified teams were divided into two groups of four teams each. Within the groups, each team plays each other once. The group winners and runners-up reach the semi-finals. The semi-final winners reach the final, the losers play for third place.

32 teams played the seven finalists in three knockout rounds. After Gabon decided not to host the finals and excluded it from the competition, Nigeria was automatically qualified as the new host.
