Evionnaz is a political municipality and a civil parish in the district of Saint-Maurice in the French-speaking part of the canton of Valais in Switzerland .
geography
The area of the municipality of Evionnaz extends from the Rhone plain in the east to the Dents Blanches in the west. The northern border is partly formed by the Dents du Midi and the Torrent de St. Barthélemy , the eastern border by the Rhone. In the south of the municipality lies at 1925 m above sea level. M. the reservoir Lac de Salanfe . The village itself is on the Rhone plain, the hamlet of La Rasse is somewhat elevated and the hamlet of La Balmaz is about 2 kilometers south.
history
Evionnaz was first mentioned in 1263 as Eviona , later Evyone (1338), Ivvian (1544) and Yvian (1654) followed. From the Middle Ages until 1822 the parish belonged to Saint-Maurice , the final separation took place in 1842, the ecclesiastical separation took place on February 20, 1847. In 1644 the village was destroyed by fire.
From 413 to 534 Evionnaz belonged to the dominion of the Burgundians , then from 534 to 888 to the Franconian part of Burgundy and later to the Kingdom of Burgundy . From 1033 to 1475 the rulership of the House of Savoy took place . After the Burgundian Wars between 1474 and 1477, the entire Lower Valais as far as Saint-Maurice fell as a subject to the seven tens . In 1798, during the French Revolution , the French invaded and then in 1801 the Valais was occupied. From 1802 the municipality belonged to the independent Republic of Valais , from 1810 to 1814 to the Département du Simplon in the First French Empire and since the Congress of Vienna in 1815 to the Swiss Confederation.

Attractions
Evionnaz is home to the Saint-Bernard-de-Menthon chapel, built in 1636 and rebuilt in 1846, and the 17th century Saint-Barthélémy chapel in the hamlet of La Rasse . There is also the Aventure labyrinth , the largest natural labyrinth in the world , in Evionnaz .
