The Dents du Midi (German: "Teeth of the South") form a mountain range in the Alps of the Chablais Valaisan, northwest of Martigny in the canton of Valais , Switzerland . The 3 km long mountain range includes seven rock peaks of approximately the same height , namely from northeast to southwest Cime de l'Est ( 3178 m above sea level ) , Forteresse , Cathédrale ( 3160 m above sea level ), Eperon ( 3114 m above sea level . ), Dent Jaune ( 3186 m above sea level ), les Doigts ( 3210 m above sea level ) and Haute Cime (with 3258 m above sea level the highest point).
geography
The south-eastern flank of the Dents du Midi drops steeply to the valley floor of the Rhone Valley, which is only 440 m. Together with the Dent de Morcles to the east (right) of the Rhone , the Dents du Midi form the gateway to the Valais, with the distinctive valley gorge of the Rhone running between them.
On the southeast slope of the Dents du Midi, just below the summit ridge, is the small glaciers plan Névé the extended Alp, at the southern foot Salanfe with the reservoir Lac de Salanfe at 1,925 m above sea level. M.
At the foot of the very steep northwest flank (elevation of up to 800 m) there are also some small ice fields (including Glacier de Chalin and Glacier de Soi ), which belong to the catchment area of Val d'Illiez . In the rock area of the north flank, the ceiling structures of the Helveticum are clearly visible. From the Col de Susanfe , a pass crossing south of the Haute Cime, a mountain hiking trail (for experienced mountain hikers) leads to its summit.
