Parish Church of Massongex

Massongex is a political municipality and a civil parish in the district of Saint-Maurice in the French-speaking part of the canton of Valais in Switzerland .

history

The area of today's municipality was settled after excavations since the end of the Younger Pre-Roman Iron Age ( La Tène period ). It was called Tarnaiae and was probably inhabited by the Gallic tribe of the Nantuaten , from which the scientific name Tarnaiae Nantuatium is derived. Tarnaiae was the first place below Martigny where the Rhone could be crossed and was therefore an important trading center during Roman times. The place name probably came from the god Taranis . Tarnaiae was probably 260 by the AD Alemanni destroyed. The foundation walls of the public thermal baths from Roman times are now imitated in Massongex.
