geography

Aerial photo (1960)

Corseaux is 445  m above sea level. M. , 1.5 km northwest of the district capital Vevey (air line). The village extends slightly higher on the north- eastern shore of Lake Geneva , at the southern foot of Mont Pèlerin , in eastern Lavaux , above Vevey.

The area of the 1.1 km² municipal area comprises a section on the north-eastern shore of Lake Geneva (around 1700 m of the lakeshore line). The municipality extends from the lakeshore northwards up the slope of Mont Pèlerin, where at 500  m above sea level. M. the highest point of Corseaux is reached. In the east the area extends to the edge of the alluvial cone of the Veveyse and is bounded here by the Ruisseau de Bergère stream. In 1997, 74% of the municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 0% for forests and woodlands and 26% for agriculture.

Corseaux has extensive housing estates and a few wineries. The neighboring municipalities of Corseaux are Chardonne , Corsier-sur-Vevey and Vevey .

history

Corseaux was a lakeside settlement during the Neolithic . Of greater importance, however, was the discovery of a burial ground from the Middle Neolithic (around 3650 to 3380 BC), which was systematically excavated from 1963 to 1975. The rich finds of grave jewelry (buttons, pearls, shells) and grave goods (jewelry) as well as various types of burial provided important information about the burial rites at that time.

The first written mention of the place took place in 1147 under the name Corsial . Later the names de Corsal (1179), Corsaul (1270) and Corsau (1453) appeared. The place name goes back to the Latin word corticella (small courtyard).

Since the Middle Ages, Corseaux was under the bishop of Lausanne. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of the Bailiwick of Lausanne . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Corseaux belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic , which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Vevey district. Corseaux was part of the large parish of Corsier and only became a politically independent parish when it was separated in 1816.

population

With 2282 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018) Corseaux is one of the medium-sized municipalities in the canton of Vaud. 84.5% of the residents are French-speaking, 7.1% German-speaking and 2.7% English-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Corseaux was 311 in 1850 and 456 in 1900. The population increased particularly during the first half of the 20th century. The building land reserves have largely been used up since 1990, which is why the population has remained fairly stable since then. The settlement area of Corseaux has now seamlessly merged with those of Vevey and Corsier-sur-Vevey.

economy

Corseaux was a predominantly agricultural village until the beginning of the 20th century . Even today, viticulture (around 20 hectares) on the perfectly sunny slopes of Lavaux has a certain role in the income structure of the population. The quality wines produced here go under the Chardonne appellation. The Corseaux vineyards have been protected from overbuilding by law since 1973.

Further jobs are available in local small businesses and especially in the service sector. In addition to everyday goods, the Corseaux trade is also geared towards tourism. There is a sports boat harbor on Lake Geneva (partly in the municipality of Chardonne). In recent decades, the village has developed into a residential community thanks to its attractive location (with a view over Lake Geneva to the Alps and in the southwest to the Jura). A large number of those in employment are commuters who work in the Vevey-Montreux region, sometimes also in Lausanne .

traffic

The community has good transport connections. It is located a little above the main road 9 , which leads from Lausanne along the lakeshore via Vevey and Montreux into the Valais . The next motorway connection to the A9 (Lausanne-Sion), which opened in 1970 and runs above the municipality, is around 3 km from the town center.

View from the “Petite Maison” ( Le Corbusier ) over Lake Geneva

Corseaux is crossed by the Lausanne-Vevey (without its own stop) and Vevey-Puidoux-Chexbres railway lines . Corseaux also has a stop for the Vevey-Mont Pèlerin funicular . The bus line, which runs from Vevey via Corsier-sur-Vevey to Corseaux, ensures the fine distribution of public transport.

Attractions

  • Corseaux does not have its own church, it still belongs to the parish of Corsier-sur-Vevey.
  • Villa Le Lac : The 'Villa Le Lac' (also called Petite Maison), a listed building that the architect Le Corbusier had built for his parents in 1923-25, stands near the lake.
