population

With 725 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018) Mex is one of the smaller municipalities in the canton of Vaud. 87.9% of the residents are French-speaking, 5.5% German-speaking and 2.0% Italian-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Mex was 198 people in 1900. A rapid population increase has been observed since around 1960 (199 inhabitants), with the number of inhabitants doubling within 30 years.

economy

Up until the second half of the 20th century, Mex was a predominantly agricultural village. Today arable farming and fruit growing only play a subordinate role in the income structure of the population. Agriculture has specialized in vegetable crops, and there is also a landscape gardening business. There used to be a brickworks in Les Vaux. At the beginning of the 1970s, a commercial zone was created in which several companies settled. The most important company is Bobst SA (mechanical and plant engineering). In the last few decades the village has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in the greater Lausanne area.

traffic

The community has good transport connections. It is located on the main road 9 from Lausanne to Vallorbe . The municipal area has been crossed by the A1 motorway (Lausanne– Yverdon ) since 1981 , with the closest connections being Lausanne-Crissier in the south and Cossonay in the north. The village is connected to the public transport network by bus line 32 (Renens-Mex) of the Transports publics de la région Lausannoise .

history

The first written mention of the place took place in the 12th century under the name Mais . In 1228 the name Maiz appeared and in 1453 May . The place name probably goes back to the personal name Macius or Masius . During the Middle Ages , Mex was part of the rule of Cossonay . Under the de Charrière family, the various fiefs in the area were united and an independent rule of Mex emerged.

After 1476 Mex came as an exclave to the Orbe-Echallens bailiwick, which was under the common rule of Bern and Freiburg . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , the village belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Cossonay district.

Attractions

The church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine dates back to 1582. However, it has only preserved a few components from this time. Several extensive restoration work and redesigns, especially the one from 1790, resulted in the present appearance; the bell tower dates from 1855.

Mex owns two locks. The Lower Castle (Château d'en bas) already existed in the Middle Ages under the Lords of Cossonay. It was rebuilt and enlarged in 1656, has three galleries one above the other on the south-facing main facade and is flanked by two towers. The Upper Castle (Château d'en haut), a stately mansion with two side wings, dates from the 18th century.
