Vuarrens is a municipality in the Gros-de-Vaud district in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland .

geography

Vuarrens is 677  m above sea level. M. , 19 km north of the canton capital Lausanne (linear distance). The clustered village extends on a wide ridge between the valleys of the Buron in the west and the Sauteru in the east, in the northern Gros de Vaud , in the Vaud Central Plateau .

The area of ​​the 9.0 km² municipality covers a section of the northern Gros de Vaud, the granary of the canton of Vaud. The municipality extends from the valley of the Buron with its extensive forest areas ( Bois du Tronc , Bois des Râpes and Bois Bretoneire ) eastward over the ridge of Vuarrens to the valley of the Sauteru. The neighboring communities of Vuarrens are Essertines-sur-Yverdon in the north, Pailly in the north- east, Fey in the south-east, Villars-le-Terroir in the south, Penthéréaz in the west and Chavornay in the north-west .

With 1004 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Vuarrens is one of the smaller municipalities in the canton of Vaud. 94.3% of the residents are French-speaking, 2.5% German-speaking and 1.1% Spanish-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Vuarrens was 532 in 1900. After the population had decreased to 415 people by 1960, a significant increase in population was recorded again.

economy

Vuarrens was a predominantly agricultural village until the second half of the 20th century . Even today, arable farming , fruit growing and cattle breeding play an important role in the income structure of the population. Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. In the last few decades the village has developed into a residential community thanks to its attractive location. Many employees are therefore commuters who work in Echallens , Yverdon and the greater Lausanne area .

The community has good transport connections. It is located on the main road 5 from Lausanne via Echallens to Yverdon . With a bypass, Vuarrens and Vuarrengel are relieved of through traffic. Vuarrens is connected to the public transport network by a postbus course that runs from Echallens to Yverdon.

history

The first written mention of the place took place in 1147 under the names Vuarens and Warens . Later the names Wareins (1234) and Vuarans (1668) appeared. The place name goes back to the Burgundian personal name Wara and means for the people of Wara . The hamlet of Vuarrengel to the north of Vuarrens was first mentioned in 1184 as Warrengel . The spellings Warengel and Warenjel are handed down from 1236 and represent the diminutive is of Vuarrens.

Vuarrens has belonged to the Lausanne Cathedral Chapter since the Middle Ages . With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of the Bailiwick of Yverdon . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Vuarrens belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Echallens district.

Attractions

The core of the church of Vuarrens is based on a medieval building that was redesigned and baroque in 1746–47 . Some characteristic farmhouses from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved in the town center.
