Bettens is a municipality in the Gros-de-Vaud district in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland .

geography

Bettens is at 584 m above sea level. M., 13 km north-north-west of the canton capital Lausanne (linear distance). The village extends on a hill on the plateau of the Gros de Vaud , in the Vaud Central Plateau , east of the Venoge valley .

The area of ​​the 3.7 km² municipal area includes a section of the slightly westward sloping plateau of the Gros de Vaud, the granary of the canton of Vaud. The western boundary is formed by the Ruisseau de Pra Gouma brook , in the south the border runs along the Ruisseau de Malomba brook ; both drain the area to the Venoge. To the east, the municipality extends over the gently undulating plateau to the Lac Coffy nature reserve . The highest point of Bettens is 613 m above sea level. With 590 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Bettens is one of the small communities in the canton of Vaud. 94.2% of the residents are French-speaking, 4.2% German-speaking and 1.2% Italian-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Bettens was 240 inhabitants in 1850 and 240 inhabitants in 1900. After the population had decreased to 167 by 1960, a significant increase in population has been observed since then.

Until the second half of the 20th century, Bettens was a village dominated by agriculture . Even today, agriculture has an important role in the income structure of the population. There is an extensive gravel quarrying area east of the village. Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. In the last few decades the village has developed into a residential community. Many employees are therefore commuters who work primarily in the greater Lausanne area.

The community has good transport connections. It is located on a main road from Lausanne via Cheseaux-sur-Lausanne to Orbe . The La Sarraz motorway junction on the A1 (Lausanne-Yverdon) opened in 1981 is around 3 km from the town. The Postbus course, which runs from Echallens to Chavornay , connects Bettens to the public transport network.

history

Stone slab graves from the Burgundian period with rich additions were discovered in the municipality . The first written mention of the place took place in 1141 under the name Betanis . The names Betens (1142), Bectens (1149) and Beteins (1228) appeared later . The place name goes back to the Burgundian personal name Beto , a popular form of Adalbert , and means for the people of Beto .

The Canons of the Great St. Bernard have maintained a small priory in Bettens since 1145. Since the Middle Ages, secular rule rests with the noble von Bettens family, who were subordinate to the Lords of Cossonay. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, Bettens came under the administration of Kastlanei Daillens in the Bailiwick of Moudon . The priory estates were secularized with the introduction of the Reformation . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , the village belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798, Bettens was first assigned to the Echallens district, and in 1803 it came to the Cossonay district.

Attractions

The church of Bettens was built in 1725 on the site of a medieval church, the tower dates from 1765. The castle of Bettens, a manor house, was built in the early 18th century.
