Cheseaux-sur-Lausanne lies at 604  m above sea level. M. , 7 km north of the canton capital Lausanne (linear distance). The village extends on the plateau of the southern Gros de Vaud , north of the Mèbre brook, in the Swiss Central Plateau .

The area of ​​the 4.6 km² municipal area includes a section of the Gros de Vaud, the granary of the canton of Vaud. The plateau is bounded in the south by the Mèbre valley . To the west, the municipality extends into the headwaters of the Chamberonne and the Petite Chamberonne with the wooded areas of Plamont and Bois du Dévin . In the east, the area extends to the slope of the Signal de Morrens , where at 680  m above sea level. M. the highest point of Cheseaux-sur-Lausanne is reached. In 1997, 20% of the municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 15% for forests and woodlands and 65% for agriculture.

With 4,343 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Cheseaux-sur-Lausanne is one of the medium-sized municipalities in the canton of Vaud. 89.4% of the residents are French-speaking, 4.1% German-speaking and 2.3% Portuguese-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Cheseaux-sur-Lausanne was 421 in 1850 and 399 in 1900. Since 1960 (491 inhabitants) a rapid population increase with a sixfold increase in the number of inhabitants has been observed within 40 years. Today the village is part of the Lausanne agglomeration.

Cheseaux-sur-Lausanne was a predominantly agricultural village until the middle of the 20th century . Today arable farming has only a marginal importance in the employment structure of the population.

With the creation of commercial and industrial zones since the 1960s, the economic structure of the village has changed significantly. The most important companies in Cheseaux-sur-Lausanne include Kudelski SA , which has been based in the town since 1969 and manufactures sound recording devices and encryption systems, and the Éditions Atlas publishing house . Since 2001, transit traffic has been routed via the bypass west of Cheseaux-sur-Lausanne. The motorway connections Cossonay on the A1 (Lausanne-Yverdon) and Lausanne-Blécherette on the A9 (Lausanne-Sion) are each around 5 km from the village.

Cheseaux-sur-Lausanne is served by the Lausanne-Echallens-Bercher-Bahn (LEB). On November 5, 1873, the section from Lausanne to Cheseaux, and on June 2, 1874, the continuation to Echallens opened. There are also bus routes from Cheseaux-sur-Lausanne to Cossonay and Cugy .

history

The remains of a Roman settlement and graves from the Burgundian period have been discovered in the municipality . The place was first mentioned in a document in 1228 under the name Chesaus . The old French word chesal describes the ruins of a building. In the Middle Ages, Cheseaux-sur-Lausanne was owned by the de Cheseaux family, whose rule extended from Crissier to Echallens.

With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, Cheseaux-sur-Lausanne came under the administration of the Lausanne bailiffs . The rulership of the village was owned by the de Loys family from 1554 to 1769. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , the village belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Lausanne district.

Attractions

The Saint-Nicolas church is mentioned as early as 1174. The current building was erected in 1741 on the site of the previous medieval building. Two castles were built under the de Loys family: the Château-Dessus (late 16th century, rebuilt in 1663) and the New Castle (nouveau château), a 17th century mansion that was enlarged in the 18th century.
