Peney-le-Jorat was a municipality in the district of Gros-de-Vaud in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland . Peney-le-Jorat merged on July 1, 2011 with the municipalities of Montaubion-Chardonney , Sottens , Villars-Mendraz and Villars-Tiercelin to form the new municipality of Jorat-Menthue .

Peney-le-Jorat is 841  m above sea level. M. , 15 kilometers north-northeast of the canton capital Lausanne (linear distance ). The clustered village extends over a plateau on the northern roof of the Jorat plateau in the Vaudois Central Plateau .

The area of ​​the 4.5 km² former municipal area covers a section of the Molasse Heights between the Mentue in the west and the central Broyetal in the east. The main part of the area is occupied by the plateau near Peney-le-Jorat, which is bordered in the northwest and north by the valley of the Ruisseau de Neyrevaux , in the east by its side stream Les Gaudines . To the west, the municipality extends to the forest hill Le Faz ( 885  m above sea level ). With 378 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2010), Peney-le-Jorat was one of the small communities in the canton of Vaud. 91.4% of the residents are French-speaking, 3.5% Portuguese-speaking and 3.2% German-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Peney-le-Jorat was 283 in 1900. After that, a decrease to 196 inhabitants was recorded due to steady emigration until 1980; since then the population has increased significantly again.

Peney-le-Jorat was a predominantly agricultural village until the second half of the 20th century . history

The first written mention of the place took place in 1154 under the names Pinoy and Pinetum . In 1228 the name Piney appeared and then the spelling Pigney has been handed down. The place name is derived from the Latin word pinetum (fir forest).

The area around Peney-le-Jorat belonged to the bishops of Lausanne in the Middle Ages and came to the lords of Palézieux in the 12th century . They left the cleared island in 1154 to the Cistercian Abbey of Haut-Crêt , which had recently been founded and which also had the right to use the extensive forests of the Jorat belonging to the Bishop of Lausanne.

After the conquest of the Vaud by Bern, the village came to the Bernese Landvogtei Oron in 1557 and formed an exclave relatively far from the main area. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Peney-le-Jorat belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic , which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Oron district.

Attractions

The church of Peney-le-Jorat was built in 1812 and the bell tower was added in 1842. Some characteristic farmhouses from the 18th and 19th centuries have been preserved in the old town center.
