Corcelles-le-Jorat is a municipality in the Broye-Vully district in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland .

geography

Corcelles-le-Jorat is 786  m above sea level. M. , 28 km southwest of the district capital Payerne (air line). The clustered village extends in a hollow of the village stream Ruisseau de Corcelles , on the eastern roof of the high plateau of the Jorat , in the Vaudois Central Plateau .

The area of ​​the 7.9 km² large municipal area comprises a section of the Molasse heights between the Jorat and the upper reaches of the Broye . The area is traversed by two source streams running almost parallel to the northeast, which merge below the village to the Ruisseau de Corcelles. To the west, the municipality extends up the slope to the extensive forest heights of the Jorat, including Esserts Clopets ( 919  m above sea level ), Bois Faucon and Bois Vuacoz (at 927  m above sea level the highest point of Corcelles-le- Jorat). In the far west, the area extends to the Corbassière stream , the source stream of the Mentue . In the south the area is bounded by the Cerjuz brook . Finds of coins and urns from the 1st and 2nd centuries AD prove an early settlement of the municipality of Corcelles-le-Jorat. The first written mention of the place took place in 1140 under the name Corceleys . The names Corselles près le Jorat (in the 17th and 18th centuries), Corselles és Jurats (1772), Corselles le Jurat (1776) appeared later ; The current name has only been passed down since 1803. The place name is derived from the Latin word corticella (small courtyard).

The area around Corcelles-le-Jorat was probably reclaimed by the monks of the Haut-Crêt Abbey . In the 12th century, the Bishop of Lausanne gave the village to a noble family, who from then on called themselves de Corcelles. In the following time there were numerous changes of ownership. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of the Moudon Bailiwick . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Corcelles-le-Jorat belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic , which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Oron district.

Attractions

A first chapel dedicated to Saint John the Baptist was built in 1484. A new church was built in another location in 1725 and has since been changed and expanded several times. A 17th century castle was rebuilt in 1769–71. The Château des Jaunins was built in the 19th century.
