history

The first written mention of the place took place in 1163 under the name Saselz . Later the names Sasel (1166), Sases (1177), Sassez (1215), Sasses (1226), Saisel (1228), Saisses (1242) as well as Saysel and Saissel appeared in the 13th century. The place name is derived from the Latin word saxum (rock, stone block).

Since the 13th century, Sassel was temporarily under the Payerne Monastery and temporarily under the Bishop of Lausanne. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of the Payerne Governorate , whereby it formed an exclave. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Sassel belonged to the Estavayer-le-Lac district in the canton of Friborg from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic. When the Mediation Constitution came into force in 1803, the place was reassigned to the Canton of Vaud and the District of Payerne.

Attractions

The Sassel chapel is mentioned as early as the beginning of the 16th century; later it was changed several times. The stately farmhouses, dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, almost all have a gable facing from southwest to northeast.
