Chevroux is a municipality in the Broye-Vully district in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland .

geography

Chevroux is 454  m above sea level. M. , 8 km north of the district capital Payerne (linear distance). The clustered village extends slightly above the southern shore of Lake Neuchâtel , in the Swiss plateau .

The area of ​​the 4.4 km² large municipal area includes a section on the south bank of Lake Neuchâtel. The very flat lakeshore is accompanied by a reed belt up to 500 m wide and a forest belt that is another 300 m wide. This is followed in the south by the wide ridge between Lake Neuchâtel and the Broyetal . At the height of Le Chanel is 485  m above sea level. M. reached the highest point of Chevroux. The east and south-east borders run along the valley of the Ruisseau de Robin , which flows into Lake Neuchâtel near Hof Ostend . In 1997, 9% of the municipal area was in settlements, 20% in forests and woodlands, 47% in agriculture and 23% was unproductive land (reed areas along the lake).

Chevroux consists of the districts Chevroux-Dessus ( 454  m above sea level ) on the slope and Chevroux-Dessous ( 434  m above sea level ) near the lake shore and the hamlet of La Motte ( 465  m above sea level ) on the ridge and some individual farms. The neighboring communities of Chevroux are Grandcour in the canton of Vaud and Estavayer and Gletterens in the canton of Friborg .

With 481 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Chevroux is one of the small communities in the canton of Vaud. 90.6% of the residents speak French, 6.3% speak German and 1.3% speak Polish (as of 2000). The population of Chevroux was 429 in 1870, compared to 367 in 1900. After the population had decreased to 276 by 1980, a significant increase has been observed since then.

Until the second half of the 20th century, Chevroux was predominantly an agricultural village. Even today, the have farming , the fruit-growing and cattle breeding an important role in the employment structure of the population, and also there are some commercial fishermen. Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. Chevroux is the location of the potting soil and fertilizer factory Bachmann-Chevroux SA and a boat yard. In the last few decades the village has also developed into a residential community. Some workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in the Payerne area .

Chevroux is a popular resort with a campsite and around 100 weekend and holiday homes near the lake. It has a sports boat harbor with over 1000 berths.

The community is located off the main thoroughfares, but can be easily reached from Grandcour . Chevroux has a connection with Payerne through a postbus course . The village is also accessed by passenger shipping on Lake Neuchâtel. Because of the shallow lakeshore, the ship landing stage is at the end of a 700 m long dam protruding into the lake.

history

The lakeshore in the municipality of Chevroux was inhabited as early as the Stone Age. 13 lakeside and pile-dwelling settlements from the Neolithic and the Bronze Age were excavated. Also in Roman times there was a small settlement northeast of today's town. A Roman cemetery was discovered near the lake shore.

The first written mention of the place took place in 1286 under the name Chevroth . Later the names Chevros (1310), Chevrod (1453) and Chevroud (1725) appeared. The place name is derived from the old French word chevrot (goat) and denotes a place where goats were bred.

Chevroux has belonged to the Grandcour rule since the Middle Ages , and to Vaumarcus for a certain time in the 14th century . With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of the Bailiwick of Avenches , and together with Grandcour it formed an exclave. In the 18th century an Indian manufacture was founded, a branch of the manufacture in Cortaillod . Canvas painting was particularly popular between 1770 and 1785. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Chevroux belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Payerne district.

Attractions

The 15th century Reformed Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste was remodeled in the 18th century. Opposite her is a wooden attic. Some stately farmhouses from the 18th and 19th centuries have been preserved in the town center.
