Vulliens is a municipality in the Broye-Vully district in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland .

geography

Vulliens is 708  m above sea level. M. , 25 km southwest of the district capital Payerne (linear distance). The village extends on a plateau sloping slightly to the west, between the valleys of Carrouge and Broye , in the Vaud Central Plateau .

The area of ​​the 6.6 km² municipal area covers a section of the Molasse hill country between the Jorat and the upper reaches of the Broye. The northern border is formed by the Broye valley, cut deep into the molasse heights , south of Moudon, and the confluence of the Bressonne with the Broye. From here, the municipality extends south to the ridge of Vulliens with the Pierravau ( 696  m above sea level ), the height of Bramafan ( 768  m above sea level ) and Le Signal ( the highest point at 776  m above sea level the community). The ridge drops off relatively steeply to the east to the Broyetal, while it slopes only gently to the west before a steep drop to the Carrougeral takes place. The erosion valley of the Carrouge forms the western boundary of Vulliens for long stretches. In the very south, the municipality extends into the Bois de Ban forest . With 594 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Vulliens is one of the small communities in the canton of Vaud. 94.5% of the residents are French-speaking, 3.4% German-speaking and 0.5% Italian-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Vulliens was 444 in 1900. Thereafter, a decrease to 266 inhabitants was recorded due to steady emigration until 1970; since then the population has increased significantly again.

Until the second half of the 20th century, Vulliens was predominantly an agricultural village. Even today, have agriculture and livestock an important role in the employment structure of the population. Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. The municipality of Vulliens was already settled in Roman times, which is proven by finds from Gallo-Roman graves. The first written mention of the place took place in 1142 under the name Wilens . The names Willens (1154), Willeyns (around 1160), Villeins (1184), Vulens (in the 12th century), Vulleins (1220), Willayns (1264), Vylliens and Wyliens (1331) as well as Vuilliens and Williens in the 14th appeared later Century. The place name goes back to the Burgundian personal name Willa and means for the people of Willa .

In the Middle Ages , Vulliens formed an important dominion that also included the villages of Carrouge, Mézières , Ropraz and Chapelle (Glâne) . In the 12th century, the Lords of Vulliens left part of their property to the newly founded Cistercian Abbey of Haut-Crêt . In the 13th century the rule came under the influence of the Savoyers. Due to inheritance divisions, the rule decreased at the end of the 13th century and then experienced numerous changes of ownership.

With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, Vulliens came under the administration of the Moudon Bailiwick . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , the village belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic , which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Oron district.

Attractions

A parish church in Vulliens is mentioned as early as 1228. Today's building has little in common with the medieval church; the only remaining parts are two windows and the 15th century portal. The 18th century Château du Sépey, a former manor house, has a tower from the 12th century. It was temporarily the residence of the painter Eugène Burnand .
