Chabrey was a municipality in the Broye-Vully district in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland .

The merger of Chabrey with Bellerive (VD) , Constantine , Montmagny , Mur (VD) , Vallamand and Villars-le-Grand to form the municipality of Vully-les-Lacs was completed on July 1, 2011.

geography

Chabrey is 494  m above sea level. M. , 12.5 km northeast of the district capital Payerne (linear distance). The clustered village extends over a wide terrace and on the south-facing slope of the ridge between Lake Neuchâtel and Lake Murten , in the Swiss plateau .

The area of ​​the 4 km² municipal area comprises a section on the south-eastern shore of Lake Neuchâtel. The communal soil extends from the lake shore to the south over a 500 m wide, marshy bank border with reeds and forest and the 60 m high steep slope Les Roches on the terrace of Chabrey. The eastern part of the municipality is occupied by the Bois de Charmontel forest on the Molasse ridge (foothills of Mont Vully ). Here is at 581  m above sea level. M. the highest point of Chabrey. In 1997, 6% of the municipal area was in settlements, 37% in forests and woodland, 45% in agriculture and a little less than 12% was unproductive land (marshland along Lake Neuchâtel, now a bird sanctuary).

Chabrey has a few individual farms and a few holiday homes on the edge of Lake Neuchâtel. Neighboring communities of Chabrey were Cudrefin , Montmagny and Villars-le-Grand in the canton of Vaud and Delley-Portalban in the canton of Friborg .

population

With 267 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2010) Chabrey was one of the small communities in the canton of Vaud. 86.4% of the residents are French-speaking, 11.6% German-speaking and 1.0% Portuguese-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Chabrey was 283 in 1850 and 222 in 1900. After the population had decreased to 136 by 1970, a significant increase in population has since been registered again.

economy

Chabrey was a predominantly agricultural village until the second half of the 20th century . Even today, the have farming and fruit growing an important role in the employment structure of the population. There is a small wine-growing region on the southern slope of the Côte au Moine . Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. In the last few decades the village has also developed into a residential community. Many employed people are commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.

traffic

The community is very well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on the connecting road from Estavayer-le-Lac to Cudrefin . The Avenches motorway junction on the A1 ( Lausanne - Bern ) is around 6 km from the town center. The Postbus course, which runs from Avenches to Cudrefin, connects Chabrey to the public transport network.

history

Two settlement sites from the Bronze Age were discovered on the shores of Lake Neuchâtel . The first written mention of the place took place in 1343 under the name Charbrey , later the name Charbey appeared . The place name goes back to the gender name Caprius or Cabrius .

Chabrey was since the Middle Ages part of about Savoy belonging Kastlanei Cudrefin. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of the Bailiwick of Avenches . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Chabrey was annexed to the canton of Friborg during the Helvetic Republic in 1798 . When the Mediation Constitution came into force in 1803, the village, together with what is now the Avenches district, was reassigned to the Canton of Vaud as an exclave. Until the 17th century Chabrey belonged to the municipality of Villars-le-Grand .

Attractions

In the old town center some typical farmhouses from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved. Chabrey does not have its own church, it belongs to the parish of Constantine .
