Trey is a municipality in the Broye-Vully district in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland .

geography

Trey lies at 576  m above sea level. M. , 6 km south of the district capital Payerne (air line). The street row village extends on a terrace on the eastern slope of the Broye valley , in the eastern Vaud Central Plateau .

The area of ​​the 3.8 km² municipal area covers a section of the hilly country between the central Broyetal and the Glânetal . The municipality extends from the canalised Broye eastward over the wide valley and onto the subsequent slopes of the Friborg Molasse hill country. Above Trey is 628  m above sea level. M. reached the highest point of the municipality. The slope is divided in two by the village stream of Trey, which has sunk a valley into the molasse layers. To the south of this valley the area extends to the plateau of Les Corvets ( 609  m above sea level ). In 1997, 9% of the municipal area was in settlements, 18% in forests and woodlands, 72% in agriculture and a little more than 1% was unproductive land.

The Malafin district ( 579  m above sea level ) and the hamlet of Granges-sous-Trey ( 475  m above sea level ), slightly elevated on the eastern edge of the Broye valley, as well as several individual farms, belong to Trey . The neighboring municipalities of Trey are Payerne , Valbroye in the canton of Vaud and Fétigny , Torny and Châtonnaye in the canton of Friborg .

With 267 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018) Trey is one of the small communities in the canton of Vaud. 87.9% of the residents are French-speaking, 10.3% German-speaking and 0.4% speak Polish (as of 2000). The population of Trey was still 442 in 1900. However, over the course of the 20th century, the population has continuously decreased.

economy

Until the second half of the 20th century, Trey was a predominantly agricultural village. Even today, arable farming and cattle breeding play an important role in the income structure of the population. There is a large horticultural company in the Broyetal. Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. The Institut de jeunes gens Cornamusaz was located in Trey until 2001 . After changing its name to Institut de Trey , it existed until the summer of 2009. In recent decades, the village has also developed into a residential community. Some workers are commuters who work mainly in Payerne.

The community is very well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on the connection road from Payerne to Romont . Trey is connected to the public transport network through the Postbus course, which runs from Payerne to Romont. In the valley below the village is the Trey train station on the Payerne-Moudon line, inaugurated on August 25, 1876.

history

The first written mention of the place took place in 1138 under the name Treis . Later the names Trais (1142), Trees (1213), Treys (1254) and Treyz (1311) appeared. The place name goes back to the Latin word tractus (place, area).

Trey has been under the Payerne Monastery since the Middle Ages . With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of the Payerne governorate . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Trey belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Payerne district. On September 7, 1837, numerous houses fell victim to a village fire.

Attractions

Trey Church was built in 1796 and restored in 1925. In 1845, today's parish hall was built, which previously housed the village school. In the town center there are some typical farmhouses from the 18th and 19th centuries. Of the former castle, which was destroyed in 1401, only a few remains of the wall are visible today.
