Les Montets is a municipality in the Broye district in the canton of Friborg in Switzerland . It was founded on January 1, 2004 through the merger of the previously independent municipalities of Aumont , Frasses , Granges-de-Vesin and Montet (Broye) .

geography

Les Montets is about 4 km south of the district capital Estavayer-le-Lac (beeline). The community extends on the southwestern edge of the Broye plain and in the adjacent Molasse hill country , in the northwestern Freiburg Central Plateau .

The area of the 10.4 km² large municipal area comprises a section of the Molasse hill country between Lake Neuchâtel and the Broyetal. The area stretches from the plateau near Estavayer southwards over the broad basin of the Arignon brook and over the hill of Montet into the valley of the Petite Glâne . This valley is bounded in the northwest by the height of La Lovataire and in the southeast by the heights of Aumont . In a narrow corner, the communal soil extends further south over the forest hill Bois d'Aumont (at 725  m above sea level the highest point of Les Montets) to the Ruisseau du Moulin (village stream of Ménières) and into the forest of Verdière . In 1997, 8% of the municipal area was in settlements, 29% in forests and woodlands, 62% in agriculture and a little less than 1% was unproductive land.

Les Montets consists of the villages Montet (Broye) ( 490  m above sea level ) north of the Petite Glâne, Frasses ( 482  m above sea level ) in the valley of the Arignon, Granges-de-Vesin ( 515  m above sea level). ) in the valley of the Petite Glâne and Aumont ( 594  m above sea level ) at the height between the valley of the Petite Glâne and the Aumont. In addition, some individual farms belong to the community. The neighboring municipalities of Les Montets are Estavayer , Sévaz , Cugy , Ménières , Nuvilly , Murist and Lully in the canton of Friborg and Valbroye in the canton of Vaud .

population

With 1,474 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Les Montets is one of the medium-sized municipalities in the canton of Friborg. 84.1% of the residents are French-speaking, 6.2% German-speaking and 3.1% speak Portuguese (as of 2000). The population of Les Montets was 1162 in 1900. In the course of the 20th century, the population decreased by around 30% to 798 inhabitants by 1980. Only since then has there been significant population growth again.

economy

Until the second half of the 20th century, Les Montets was a predominantly agricultural village. Mills used to be operated along the Petite Glâne. Even today, arable farming , fruit growing and animal husbandry have an important place in the income structure of the population. Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. Several companies, including a furniture factory and a metal construction company, have set up shop in Montet (Broye). A gravel pit is being exploited near Granges-de-Vesin. In the last few decades the village has also developed into a residential community. Many employed people are therefore commuters who mainly work in the Estavayer-le-Lac and Payerne regions.

traffic

The community is very well developed in terms of transport. Montet (Broye) and Frasses are on the old main road from Payerne to Estavayer-le-Lac . The nearest connection to the A1 motorway (Lausanne-Bern), which opened in 2001 and crosses the northern municipality, is around 2 km from Montet (Broye). All the villages of Les Montets are connected to the public transport network by the Transports publics fribourgeois (TPF) bus line , which operates a circular route from Estavayer-le-Lac to the hinterland.

history

The municipality of Les Montets was populated very early. Traces of settlement from the Bronze Age , the Iron Age and the Roman Age have been discovered near Frasses . Graves from the La Tène period have been found at Frasses and Aumont.

Since the Middle Ages, all the towns of Les Montets have been under Estavayer's rule. After Bern conquered Vaud in 1536, the villages came under the rule of Friborg and were assigned to the Estavayer Bailiwick. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), the villages of Les Montets belonged to the Estavayer district during the Helvetic and subsequent periods before being incorporated into the Broye district in 1848.

As part of the community mergers supported by the canton of Friborg since 2000, the residents of Montet (Broye) , Frasses , Granges-de-Vesin and Aumont spoke out in favor of a merger. With effect from January 1, 2004, the new municipality of Les Montets was created.
