The farming village extends on the ridge between the valleys of Bainoz in the northwest and Petite Glâne in the southeast, in the Molasse hills of the northwestern Freiburg Central Plateau .

The area of the 1.8 km² former municipal area comprised a section of the Molasse hill country between Lake Neuchâtel and the central Broyetal . In the west and north the Bainoz formed the border. From here, the parish extended to the Seiry plateau, which is approximately 2 km long and 500 m wide. The highest point of Seiry is 628  m above sea level. population

With 237 inhabitants (at the end of 2005) Seiry was one of the small communities in the canton of Friborg. 86.1% of the residents are French-speaking, 5.9% German-speaking and 5.5% speak Albanian (as of 2000). The population of Seiry was 209 in 1900. In the course of the 20th century, the population decreased by almost 60% to 89 people due to strong emigration by 1970. Only since then has there been rapid population growth combined with a doubling of the population within 30 years.

economy

Until the second half of the 20th century, Seiry was a predominantly agricultural village. Even today, arable farming , fruit growing and animal husbandry have an important place in the income structure of the population. Some other jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. Shell limestone is mined in a quarry northeast of Seiry . In the last few decades the village has also developed into a residential community. Many employed people are therefore commuters who mainly work in the Estavayer-le-Lac and Payerne regions.

traffic

The village can only be reached by a spur road from the Bainoztal. The closest connection to the A1 motorway (Lausanne – Bern), which opened in 2001, is around 6 km from the town center. Seiry itself has no connection to the public transport network.

history

The first written mention of the place took place in 1180 under the name Seirie . Later the names Serie (1275), Serye (1317) and Seyriez (1532) appeared. The place name is derived from the Gallo-Roman personal name Serius .

Since the Middle Ages , Seiry formed its own small rule, which was under the influence of the Lords of Cheyres . In 1521 the village was badly affected by a fire. After Bern conquered Vaud in 1536, the village came under the rule of Friborg and was assigned to the Estavayer Bailiwick. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), Seiry was part of the Estavayer district during the Helvetic and subsequent periods before being incorporated into the Broye district in 1848.

As part of the community mergers funded by the canton of Friborg since 2000, a merger project was developed with the aim of merging Seiry and Bollion with Lully (FR) . At the community meetings on April 22, 2005, the merger was approved by the voters of all three communities, in Seiry the percentage of votes was 86%. The merger was completed with effect from January 1, 2006.
