Parish before the merger on December 31, 2011

Until December 31, 2011, Palézieux was a municipality in the Lavaux-Oron district of the canton of Vaud in Switzerland . The former municipality consists of two centers: Palézieux-Village and Palézieux-Gare. On January 1, 2012, Palézieux merged with Oron .

geography

Palézieux is located at 634  m above sea level. M. , two kilometers south of Oron-la-Ville and 16 kilometers east of the canton capital Lausanne (as the crow flies). The village extends in the wide basin of the Haute-Broye, between the rivers of the Broye and its right tributary Mionne , in the eastern edge of the Vaud Central Plateau .

The area of the 5.8 km² former municipal area comprises a section of the upper Broyetal and the adjacent Molasse heights in the Alpine foothills. The central part of the former municipal area forms the wide valley basin of the Haute-Broye, which the Broye flows through from southeast to northwest. At Palézieux-Village this takes the Biorde from the south and the Mionne from the east . The molasse heights of the area connect to the up to 2 km wide valley basin . Only in the east do these still belong to the former municipal area, namely at Palézieux-Gare (up to 700  m above sea level ), in the Pierra Confry forest (at 752  m above sea level, the highest point in Palézieux) and in the Bois de l'Erberey (up to 740  m above sea level ). In 1997, 11% of the former municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 25% for forests and woodlands and 64% for agriculture.

The former municipality consists of the localities Palézieux-Village ( 634  m above sea level ) in the Broyetal and Palézieux-Gare ( 676  m above sea level ) on the slope between the rivers of Broye and Biorde. In addition, several individual farms belong to Palézieux.

population

With 1,326 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2010), Palézieux is one of the medium-sized former municipalities in the canton of Vaud. 89.9% of the residents are French-speaking, 4.4% German-speaking and 2.1% Portuguese-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Palézieux was 587 in 1900. In the course of the 20th century the population increased slowly but continuously; only during the 1980s was an increased population increase recorded.

economy

Until the middle of the 20th century, Palézieux was predominantly an agricultural village. Even today, agriculture and animal husbandry have a certain place in the income structure of the population. Numerous other jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. There is a larger industrial area at Palézieux-Gare. The local companies include companies from the pharmaceutical sector, car body construction, the manufacture of construction machinery, a locksmith's shop and a welding shop. Palézieux has been the location of the Institut romand d'éducation de Serix since 1863. With the construction of several single-family houses in the last few decades, the village has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in Lausanne and Vevey .

On September 4, 1862, the railway line from Lausanne to Friborg with the Palézieux-Gare station was put into operation. Palézieux-Gare is a railway junction, as the line opened on August 25, 1876 via Moudon to Payerne branches off here. This route also has a train station in Palézieux-Village. On April 29, 1901 the narrow-gauge railway line from Palézieux-Gare to Châtel-Saint-Denis was inaugurated. Bus routes from Palézieux-Gare to Oron-la-Ville, Semsales , Mézières and Romont ensure the fine distribution of public transport .

history

Remains of a Roman villa testify that the municipality of Palézieux was already settled in Roman times . The first written mention of the place took place in 1134 under the names Pallexiu , Palleysieu and Palaisol . Later, numerous other spellings appeared: Palatiolum (1141), Palaysol , Palazuz , Palaziolum and Pallasiolum (around 1155), Palesuez (1218), Palasuel (1228), Pallexieu (1545), and for the first time Palézieux (1675). Palaisieux and Palésieux have also come down to us from 1867 . The place name is derived from the Latin word palatiolum ( diminutive of palatium ) meaning small palace .

In the Middle Ages, Palézieux formed a rule that was under the sovereignty of Savoy . The lords of Palézieux founded a castle next to the Broye bridge in the 12th century. Successors to the lords of Palézieux were the lords of Billens at the beginning of the 14th century, who founded the walled town of Palézieux near the castle and granted it town charter in 1344. At the end of the 14th century, Palézieux came to the Counts of Gruyères, the rule was united with that of Oron and Palézieux was downgraded to the rank of village.

After the conquest of Vaud by Bern, the village came to the Bernese bailiwick of Oron in 1557 . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Palézieux belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic , which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Oron district.

Attractions

Already in the 12th century there was a church in Palézieux. The current building in classical style dates from 1829, while the rectory was built in 1707. Only a few remains of the walls of the former Palézieux castle have survived.
