Until December 31, 2011, Ecoteaux was a municipality in the Lavaux-Oron district of the canton of Vaud in Switzerland . On January 1, 2012, she merged with Oron .

geography

Ecoteaux lies at 766  m above sea level. M. , four kilometers south-east of Oron-la-Ville and 18 kilometers east of the canton capital Lausanne (as the crow flies). The scattered settlement community extends over a terrace above the Broye valley , in the eastern edge of the Vaud Central Plateau .

The area of ​​the 3.6 km² former municipal area comprises a section of the Molasse hill country in the Alpine foothills. The southern border is formed by the upper reaches of the Broye, whose direction of flow here draws a sharp curve from initially southwest to northwest. From the Broye, the former municipal soil extends as a narrow strip northwards over the slope of Ecoteaux, which slopes gently to the west, to the valley of the Mionne . On the Molasse ridge between Broye and Mionne is 810  m above sea level. M. reached the highest point of Ecoteaux. In 1997, 7% of the former municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 15% for forests and woodlands and 78% for agriculture.

The hamlet of Les Indévis ( 771  m above sea level ) north of the village as well as numerous other farm settlements and individual farms belong to Ecoteaux .

With 356 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2010) Ecoteaux is one of the small former municipalities of the canton of Vaud. 92.8% of the residents are French-speaking, 4.8% German-speaking and 1.5% Portuguese-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Ecoteaux was 269 in 1850 and 306 in 1900. Thereafter, a decrease to 234 inhabitants was recorded due to steady emigration until 1970; since then the population has increased significantly again.

Until the second half of the 20th century, Ecoteaux was predominantly an agricultural village. Even today, have agriculture and livestock an important role in the employment structure of the population. Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. Ecoteaux has been the location of a leisure center since 1984. In the last few decades the village has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in Lausanne and Vevey .

The former municipality is located away from major thoroughfares on a connecting road from Palézieux to Semsales . Ecoteaux is connected to the public transport network by a postbus course that runs from Oron-la-Ville via Palézieux to Semsales.

history

The former municipal area of ​​Ecoteaux was already inhabited in Roman times, which has been proven by the remains of a settlement from the 2nd and 3rd centuries. The first written mention of the place took place in 1134 under the names Escotals and Escoit . The names Scotals (1157), Costels (also in the 12th century), Escotaus (1233), Escotaz (1251) appeared later , and the spelling Ecotteaux was still used around 1900 . The place name was created by agglutination from es coteaux (on the slopes / hills).

Since the Middle Ages, Ecoteaux has been under the rule of Palézieux. After the conquest of Vaud by Bern, the village came to the Bernese bailiwick of Oron in 1557. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Ecoteaux belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic , which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Oron district. In 1872 the hamlet of Very and the former castle came to the municipality of Maracon.

Attractions

The school building with a bell tower was built in 1842. Ecoteaux does not have its own church, it belongs to the parish of Maracon.
