economy

Up until the first half of the 20th century, Paudex was a predominantly agricultural village. At that time viticulture was practiced on the slope above the village . Today there is only a vine-growing area of 0.6 hectares, and arable farming has hardly any significance in the income structure of the population.

Coal deposits were discovered in the Paudèze valley in the 17th century . The stone and brown coal was mined particularly in the period 1771-1796, in the second half of the 19th century and during the two world wars. In the 18th century there was a glassworks in Paudex. Today, jobs are concentrated in small and medium-sized companies (including Nestlé Nespresso SA and the watch manufacturer Blancpain ) and the service sector. The Center Patronal is located in Paudex.

In the last few decades the village has developed into a residential community thanks to its attractive location. Many workers are also commuters who work mainly in the city of Lausanne and in the surrounding communities.

traffic

The community has good transport connections. It is located on the main road 9 , which leads from Lausanne along the lakeshore via Vevey and Montreux into the Valais . The Belmont motorway junction on the A9 (Lausanne-Sion) opened in 1974 is around 2 km from the town. Paudex is connected to the public transport network by line 9 of the Lausanne trolleybus operated by Transports publics de la région Lausannoise , which runs from Prilly via Lausanne to Lutry. The railway line from Lausanne to Valais crosses the municipality, but has no stop in Paudex.

history

The first written mention of the place took place in 1220 under the name Paudais . Later the names Poudans , Poudais , Poudaix and Poudays followed . In the Middle Ages Paudex belonged to the Bishop of Lausanne, but was administratively dependent on Lutry. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of the rural bailiff of Lausanne . It initially belonged to Pully and only became an independent municipality in 1721. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Paudex belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Lausanne district.

Attractions

The current building of Bochat Castle, a fortified mansion equipped with two towers that once stood in the middle of the vineyards, was built in the early 16th century. The castle underwent major changes in 1931. Paudex does not have its own church, it belongs to the parish of Pully. In 1988 an ecumenical chapel was inaugurated. The arched viaduct of the Lausanne - Villeneuve railway line over the Paudèze valley is located near Paudex.
