Nespresso is a portion coffee system introduced by the Swiss food company Nestlé . Under this name , Nestlé sells coffee that is portioned in aluminum capsules. The capsules can only be prepared in special coffee or espresso machines.

For the sale of coffee machines, Nespresso cooperates with companies whose brands are intended to guarantee high quality. These sales brand partners vary from country to country - not every brand is known in every country. All devices that are sold as Krups devices in Germany are sold in Austria and Switzerland under the Turmix name . Other well-known partners in the German-speaking area are De'Longhi , Miele , Siemens and Koenig in Switzerland. Former sales partners are Alessi , Saeco and Jura .

With the exception of the Lattissima types, which are made by DeLonghi in Italy, all devices are manufactured by the world's largest producer of coffee machines, the Swiss company Eugster / Frismag in Romanshorn .

The coffee machines only work with capsules of a certain shape. Nespresso's patent on this shape has now expired.
Until the patent expired, the capsules could only be ordered directly from Nespresso ("Nespresso Club" - mail order business ) (see also lock-in effect ). Compatible capsules from other suppliers that are available in supermarkets or retail chains have only been available since the fourth quarter of 2011.

In response, Nestlé opened "Nespresso boutiques" selling their own coffee capsules. In 2014 there were over 200 worldwide, 15 of them in Germany, 9 in Austria and 23 in Switzerland.

history

According to the company, the Nespresso system was invented in 1970 by engineer Eric Favre in Nestlé's research and development department and patented in 1976. It was only launched ten years later (1986) in French-speaking Switzerland . At first there was no economic success.

From 1991, after the marketing specialist Jean-Paul Gaillard took over the management of Nespresso and the system was offered internationally with the machine partner Krups, Nespresso became stronger in the market. Popular print and television advertising featuring George Clooney contributed to its success in the early 2010s .

The company "Nestlé Nespresso SA", based in Lausanne , is part of the Nestlé Group, but operates as an independent sales organization on the market. The company is (as of 2006) led by Richard Girardot. It operates in 38 countries. From 2005 to 2006 sales grew by 42% to 1.16 billion Swiss francs. In 2006, Nespresso sold about three billion coffee capsules; In 2010 sales amounted to 3.2 billion Swiss francs and sales of 4.8 billion coffee capsules.

The number of coffee machines sold in retail stores rose by 32% from 2005 to 2006 to over 1 million. This enabled Nespresso to increase its market share on the espresso machine market from 17.9% to 22.7%.

According to a 2005 study by Evalueserve , Nespresso was the third largest single-portion coffee seller with a global market share of 11%.

A new Nespresso system under the name Nespresso VertuoLine was launched in the USA and Canada in February 2014, and in Germany in September 2018 . Nespresso VertuoLine uses a new capsule system and its own machines that are not compatible with the Nespresso OriginalLine. The capsules for the Vertuoline system differ significantly in shape and also have a barcode that the VertuoLine machines read. Different capsule sizes are used for the first time. The capsules are set in rotation during the preparation process. According to Nestlé, this new system is patented for the next 20 years.

production

All coffee capsules are produced in three production facilities in Switzerland. The largest system has been in Avenches since 2008 , others are in Orbe VD (2002) and since 2015 in Romont FR . Two further production lines are currently being built in Romont, which are expected to go into operation in 2019 and 2020. The capsules are exported to 62 countries.

How the machines work

The central element in the preparation of the coffee is the aluminum capsule in which the entire brewing process takes place. When the capsule is placed in the machine, it is enclosed in the capsule cage, pressed against a so-called pyramid plate and pierced by three thorns. When the brewing process starts, hot water prepared in the machine is pressed into the capsule at high pressure. As soon as the pressure inside the capsule has become high enough, the aluminum membrane on the underside of the capsule can no longer withstand it and tears. The coffee brewed inside the capsule can now flow out through the perforated membrane and the holes in the pyramid plate.

The Vertuo System

In February 2014, the new capsule and machine system "Vertuo" (formerly: VertuoLine) was presented in the USA and Canada; it was introduced in Germany in September 2018.
With "Vertuo" larger portions of coffee are brewed - up to 414 ml of coffee can be prepared. The capsules are more voluminous, they have between 7 g and 12.5 g of coffee powder per capsule. Here, too, the coffees have a "crema" that is higher than the small capsules and resembles a head of foam. The Vertuo capsules require specially designed machines that can process these capsules.

The following 28 varieties are available (as of Sep. 2019):

Alto (414 ml):

  • Intenso (intensity 7)
  • Dolce (intensity 4)

Mug (230 ml):

  • Intenso (intensity 9)

  • Odacio (intensity 7)
  • Melozio (intensity 6)
  • Elvazio (intensity 4)

  • Chiaro (intensity 6)
  • Bianco Leggero (without intensity)

Espresso (40 ml):

  • Diavolitto (intensity 11)
  • Altissio (intensity 9)
  • Voltesso (intensity 4)
  • Decaffeinato Intenso (intensity 7)

In addition, there are also temporary varieties, e.g. B. Iced coffee capsules in summer and flavored varieties at Christmas time.

The machines work with a completely newly developed principle. The coffee is not brewed with pump pressure: Instead, the capsules are brought to speeds of up to 7000 revolutions per minute. Nespresso invented the term “centrifusion” for this brewing process. In addition, the VertuoLine machines have an integrated barcode laser scanner that can determine 5 parameters (cup size, temperature, speed, flow rate and the contact time of water and coffee) of the respective capsule.

Disposal and recycling

used capsules in a recycling yard

The coffee capsules are largely made of aluminum, which is suitable for recycling. In Switzerland and Austria, a separate collection and recycling system has been introduced for the capsules. Alternatively, Nespresso recommends returning the used capsules to an aluminum collection point. Since 2020, used aluminum coffee capsules can also be returned to Migros .

In cooperation with Swiss Post , “Recycling at Home” was launched in early 2018. The used capsules are put into special envelopes and sent to "Nespresso recycling".

Another possibility of recycling is to refill the capsule yourself with fresh coffee powder. There are numerous instructions for this.
In Switzerland, the Outpresso is a recycling device for consumers that separates the aluminum in the capsules from the coffee grounds. This enabled the aluminum to be disposed of at a metal collection point and the coffee grounds to be composted or disposed of by the consumer. This solution had about the same ecological balance as aluminum beverage cans. The device has not been offered since May 2013. The level of residual dirt in the capsule turned out to be too high to be an efficient recycling solution.

In Austria and Switzerland, used capsules can also be handed in directly to Nespresso shops or to shops that sell Nespresso machines. In Germany, the used capsules can be disposed of in the yellow bin / yellow sack. In communities without a yellow bin / yellow sack (e.g. in Munich ), the capsules must be returned to recycling centers or recycling islands.

In the meantime, capsules from other suppliers are commercially available that are, for example, compostable, predominantly made from bio-based raw materials and contain no aluminum. There were lengthy patent disputes about these products, but these were decided to the detriment of Nestlé.

The outer packaging of the capsules represents a major environmental problem. It is intensely printed, partially coated outer cartons that also contain plastic inserts.
The packing density is low, which is why unnecessarily high empty volumes are transported. This leads to an unusually high energy requirement for transport in relation to the respective portion.

Professional users

Nespresso Professional Pads before and after use

There is the Nespresso Professional system for professional users with a correspondingly higher coffee throughput . This works with flat Nespresso capsules with a diameter of around 40 mm. The Professional capsules are not made of aluminum foil, but of an aluminum-coated plastic film. The system is not compatible with the Nespresso consumer system and is also sold differently.

The machines in the Professional system are primarily characterized by their larger tanks and waste containers. There are also machines in which the capsule only needs to be pushed into a slot and the capsule is tensioned / perforated / ejected using a motor. Used Professional Pads cannot and do not have to be returned to Nespresso for recycling. They can be disposed of in the yellow sack. There is also the Nespresso Aviation System , which was specially developed for the aviation industry. For example, Swiss uses a Nespresso machine certified by the Federal Aviation Administration in its new Boeing 777-300ER .

similar products

Since 2009, various vendors have been offering empty, single-use capsules that fit into Nespresso machines. The refill capsules allow you to prepare various types of coffee (or tea) with Nespresso machines. These capsules are filled with ground coffee and inserted into the Nespresso machine like normal Nespresso capsules.

The company Alice Allison SA offers under the name NexPod fillable and two to three times usable capsules. The cleaning effort is less with this system than with a permanent filter, but here, too, the advantage typical of single-serving systems of not having to handle either dry or wet coffee powder is eliminated.

In France, the Ethical Coffee Company has been offering a compatible coffee capsule since 2011, which is made of cellulose fibers and is biodegradable. In Germany and Austria, capsules from the Ethical Coffee Company have been available under the name ESPRIMO since September 2011. From October 2011 the capsules were also available for a certain time under the name of the manufacturer in stationary retail ( Rewe Group shops ). However , during an investigation the Stiftung Warentest found that the capsules are not - as promised - completely biodegradable and compostable. The reason: They contain a thin layer of aluminum that does not degrade. In addition, the bioplastic used in the capsules is useless for composting as it contains neither nutrients nor minerals. The capsules therefore do not belong in the organic bin or compost heap, but in the residual waste. In a taste test, the tasters came to the conclusion that the coffee from the tested Ethical capsules could not compete with Nespresso capsules in terms of taste and appearance.

In Rewe branches, compatible capsules from the Italian company Caffè Wahrano are sold under the “Èspresso®1882” brand. Edeka sells compatible capsules from the Senseo brand ( DE Master Blenders ). At Migros and her daughter Tegut compatible capsules of "Café Royal" brand of the Swiss manufacturer are Delica available.

The Mondelēz International group , which also sells its own Tassimo system , had announced that it would sell Nespresso-compatible capsules in Germany in the second half of 2013. These have been available since then under the “Jacobs Momente” brand.

The Austrian company Caffè Negrini has been selling coffee capsules in over 800 Austrian grocery stores since March 2012, which can be used in all Nespresso machines.

At the end of May 2012, the mycoffeestar company launched the first sustainable, refillable coffee capsule made of stainless steel. The capsule is opened and closed with a screw thread, has no wearing parts and can be filled with your own coffee as often as you like.

Competing systems include Dolce Gusto (also Nestlé), Senseo and Tassimo.

criticism

A disadvantage of the Nespresso coffee is the enormous amount of garbage that is generated by the coffee capsules . If these are not disposed of properly, the aluminum in the capsules will not be recycled. This means that a large part of the high energy expenditure for the production of the aluminum capsules is lost. However, recycling the aluminum is also significantly more energy-consuming than loose coffee.

In Austria, Nespresso does not have to pay a disposal fee, since the capsules of the Nespresso brand are not packaging in the sense of the current definition (similar to tea bags or layers of wax in cheese or sausage).

Manufacturers of portioned coffee pod systems , for which no alternative offers are available on the market, have been criticized for the so-called lock-in effect . This means that the acquisition costs for the respective coffee machines are often low, the prices for the coffee in the capsules are - in some cases many times - higher than that of conventional coffee. The price for Nespresso coffee is up to 80 euros per kilogram of coffee.

Other manufacturers offer cheaper capsules compatible with Nespresso. However, by technically modifying the coffee machines, Nestlé is trying to make these third-party capsules incompatible in order to maintain the capsule monopoly on their machines.

In September 2011 the NGO Solidar Suisse launched a campaign in which it called on Nespresso to offer fair trade coffee. The focus of the campaign was a parody of a Nespresso commercial with George Clooney . Nespresso rejected the criticism.
