Tassimo machine from Braun (first generation)

Tassimo is a hot beverage system from the international beverage group Jacobs Douwe Egberts (JDE). The Braun company was commissioned to manufacture the coffee system machines in 2005 . Since spring 2008, Tassimo machines have no longer been manufactured and sold by Braun, but under the Bosch brand .

Capsular system

Inner workings of a Tassimo capsule with drawn water flow

The disposable capsules are marketed as T Discs and consist of a thermoforming plastic capsule that is sealed with an aluminum-coated or aluminum foil and contains the preparation medium (coffee grounds, tea, milk, etc.). The plastic capsule also serves as a brewing chamber, which is why, as with other capsule systems, the type can be changed immediately after each brewing process without laborious cleaning of the machine, as the machine hardly comes into contact with the finished product. In the capsules with ground coffee, the finished drink is filtered using a filter fleece . Unlike other capsule systems, the Tassimo capsule has both the hot water inlet and the finished beverage outlet from the same side - namely through the foil of the capsule pierced from below in the machine - which is advertised as "inverse flow technology". After the drink has been prepared, the entire capsule must be disposed of with household waste - an empty capsule weighs around 4.4 g. On the top of each capsule there is a barcode that the Tassimo machine can use to read in the appropriate preparation parameters (pressure, quantity, temperature, etc.).

In addition to espresso and coffee , the Tassimo machines can also prepare tea , cocoa drinks and mixed drinks with milk such as cappuccino or latte macchiato in three layers. To do this, first insert a capsule to create the milk foam and then another capsule for the espresso. Thanks to their own capsule with liquid milk only for the milk foam, Tassimo machines do not need a steam nozzle and are therefore easier to care for than machines with a frothing nozzle. With the capsule for the milk foam, JDE uses its own patented process for ultrafiltered milk. As a result, the Tassimo milk should neither have a boiled nor taste different from powdered milk. Different portion sizes (the milk capsule, for example, has a lot more content than an espresso capsule) are made using different capsule heights.

The Tassimo machine works with less pressure than classic espresso machines for preparing espresso. The manufacturer allegedly compensates for this technical boundary condition with the inverse flow technology described above, with which all the properties of a traditionally prepared espresso are to be achieved.

Competing systems include Nespresso , Dolce Gusto and Senseo . Unlike Nespresso, the capsules with coffee, tea and cocoa drinks are also available in retail outlets.

machinery

The Tassimo machines were manufactured by Saeco in Romania from 2005 to 2008 and sold by Braun . Braun stopped selling Tassimo machines in 2008 because the new parent company Procter & Gamble is also active in the coffee market. BSH Bosch and Siemens Hausgeräte has been producing a model of a Tassimo machine (T 40 base) in four colors in its factory in Slovenia since 2008 and sells it under the Bosch brand name.

The second generation (devices from Bosch) differs from the first generation (devices from Braun) in addition to many detailed improvements, in particular in two points: On the one hand, a new patented instantaneous water heater is used for faster and more energy-saving heating of the water, and on the other hand, it cleans itself the second generation itself with steam instead of air.

In the second quarter of 2011, the third generation came out with the T42, also from the manufacturer Bosch. The only difference between the T40 and T42 series is that the T42 is a so-called "Chrome Edition", so small areas of the housing that were previously made of plastic are now made of chrome-nickel steel.

The red model TAS 4013 was only introduced later in Germany. In October 2008, the improved model TAS 6969 (T 65 Comfort) from Bosch with a display that u. a. informs when the machine needs to be descaled.

The brown model TAS 4017 was offered in 2011 as a limited special edition including a 0.5 liter jug.

The white TAS 2011 model did not come onto the market until the end of 2009. The structure of the TAS 2011 differs significantly from the previous models in the 4xxx, 6xxx and 8xxx series. The most striking feature is that colored parts are available as accessories so that the front of the device can be matched to the kitchen in red, green, brown and mint blue. The height of the cup stand is not adjusted by turning, but by sliding it into a higher slot.

Varieties and recipes

In Europe, different types of coffee, tea and cocoa from the different brands of Mondelēz International such as Jacobs Coffee, Coffee HAG , Twinings and Suchard are offered in T-Discs. The range has been expanded to include special varieties through temporary cooperations, e.g. B. Milka cocoa and Darjeeling tea (2008–2012), Starbucks coffee (until 2011).

The capsules are sold through retail outlets in packaging units of 4, 8 or 16 servings. Some special varieties can only be purchased on the Internet, e.g. B. Twinings Chai Latte Lemongrass, Cadbury Cocoa. (Status: 2014)

The cup sizes of the types of beverage are divided into small (50–60 ml), medium (120–160 ml) and large (215–285 ml). Many types of coffee also have an intensity value on a 7-digit scale, which indicates the strength of the coffee.

Officially, recipes are also published, e.g. B. for iced coffee .

In October 2015, Tassimo switched the large milk discs for latte macchiato from milk to cream. The discs are then the size of cappuccino milk discs. According to Tassimo's PR department, the use of cream instead of milk has not changed the taste experience. However, customer reviews in the Tassimo online shop do not confirm this. The use of cream has also increased the calorie content per drink.

criticism

As with other coffee systems, the so-called lock-in effect (acquisition costs low, operating costs high) and non-compostable beverage capsules (household waste) are criticized at Tassimo . In a study by EMPA , Tassimo is seen as the most environmentally harmful system.

As with other systems (except ESE ) there is no open market for T-Discs due to various patents from Jacobs Douwe Egberts.
