The ESE standard (ESE = English easy serving espresso ) is an open standard of the Consorzio per lo Sviluppo e la Tutela dello Standard ESE (German: "Consortium for the promotion and protection of the ESE standard") of coffee pods , which is specially designed for Espresso machines with portafilter was developed.

background

These are mostly espresso machines without a grinder . The coffee powder is located between two layers of filter paper and is placed in a portafilter, which is then clamped into the machine. A water heater then passes the water through the powder at a pressure of 9 to 10 bar. Since these portafilter mostly have a smaller diameter than the standard pods, only espresso pods with a diameter of 44 mm often fit here. These are available with different roasts, right up to decaffeinated coffee. The advantage lies in the simplicity of use, the disadvantage in the price and procurement. In contrast to the more common Senseo- compatible pads, the pads are smaller (diameter 44 mm instead of approx. 70 mm for Senseo), are filled with pressed coffee powder and require a pump pressure of 10 to 20 bar (Senseo <3 bar).
