The company was founded by Thomas Twining founded (1675-1741), a former employee of the East India Company , which in 1706 the cafe "Tom's Coffee House" at beach , London opened in Devereux Court. In the 17th and 18th centuries, coffee houses were important social meeting places where men maintained their business relationships. The competition between the many emerging coffee houses was fierce, but Thomas Twining was able to establish himself successfully with the sale of tea - at that time a fashion drink of the upper class . Twining's success was so immediate that he was able to charge exorbitant prices for his teas: 100 grams of Twining's Gunpowder Green Tea cost over 200 euros in 1706, converted to today's prices.

Twinings had a good reputation that soon reached the British nobility. So were, among others, Roger Abdy , Lord George Anson , the family Blount of Twickenham , Earl of Cardigan and the painter William Hogarth to his clientele.

In 1717 Thomas Twining was able to open two more coffee houses, including the house on Strand 216, where a Twinings Tea Shop is still located today. In the same year he made the golden lion his company emblem (Twining's golden lion is the oldest known company logo that is still in use today). In 1734 Twining gave up the coffee houses and from now on concentrated entirely on the more lucrative tea trade. Thomas Twining died in 1741 and bequeathed his business to his son Daniel. Daniel Twining began successfully exporting tea to America . When Daniel Twining died in 1762, his second wife, Mary Little, continued the family business. Daniel Twining's son from his first marriage, Richard Twining, took over the business from her in 1771 and his younger brother John became his business partner in 1782. When tons of tea were thrown into the sea at the Boston Tea Party in 1773, the company's chroniclers recorded that there was no Twinings Tea among them.

Thanks to the business successes of his grandfather and father, Richard Twining was one of the most important businessmen in London of his time. Prime Minister William Pitt heeded his advice to cut taxes on imported goods, and with the Commutation Act of 1784, he cut tea taxes so that tea was now affordable for everyone.

Richard Twining II and his brothers George and John took over the family business in 1818. In 1825, in addition to the tea business, they opened Twining's Bank , which merged with Lloyds in 1892 . In 1837 Queen Victoria Twinings was the first tea merchant to grant the royal seal as purveyor to the court .

In 1857 Richard Twining III took over. runs the family business together with his cousin Samuel Harvey Twining. They expanded the business to include more tea shops across London and helped make tea a drink for the masses in Great Britain through steady price cuts.

During the Second World War, the Twinings parent company at Strand 216 was hit by a bomb. Within a few hours, the entrance gate of the destroyed house was rebuilt and the tea trade continued.

After being taken over by Associated British Foods in 1964 , Twinings expanded and a new tea factory was built at Andover . Additional production sites were later added in Woolsbridge ( New Forest ) and Greensboro ( North Carolina , USA). Today, many Twinings teas are already mixed in Calcutta , from where they are shipped worldwide.
