Latte macchiato

Latte macchiato [ latːɛ makːja (ː) to ] ( Italian for "stained milk") is a hot drink made of milk and espresso that the coffee with milk but contains similar usually more milk and from more roasted beans is prepared. In Italy, a little espresso is usually mixed into a glass of milk. In the meantime, however, in regions that are heavily frequented by tourists, the usual version north of the Alps with separate layers is available.

In Italy, latte macchiato should not be confused with the caffè macchiato that is popular there, which consists of an espresso with little milk.

preparation

With the original latte macchiato, the espresso is poured into a mug with heated milk. Stratification was not planned here. Decorating with cocoa powder or cinnamon was only added in the course of time for visual reasons. In German-speaking countries, latte macchiato is usually served in a tall, narrow glass and consists of three layers that should only mix a little. The bottom layer is hot milk. Then follows a layer consisting of an espresso . The top layer consists of milk foam . The espresso has a lower density than the milk containing milk sugar and therefore stays above it. It is important that the espresso must be hotter than the milk so that the espresso and the milk do not mix. The foam, which in turn consists of denatured protein components of the milk and contains a lot of air, remains over the espresso. In the case of plant-based milk substitutes, increased yeast and soy proportions promote the ability to foam and swim.

In the restaurant, coffee is served with a long-handled spoon (if necessary with an ice cream spoon). In Italy, the country of origin, the latte macchiato is traditionally served with a straw. This drinking technique does not mix the different layers of the drink.

Grammar and pronunciation

According to Duden is both the latte (because the Italian word latte male sex is) and the latte (because the German equivalent milk is female; certainly influenced by the slat of wood and the fact that nouns "-e" on are predominantly female in German) correct. The word is pronounced "makkiato". The h is responsible for this and must not be forgotten in the typeface.

Cultural meaning

Latte macchiato is often used as a symbol for trend-conscious new-city dwellers of the creative middle class and young parents' generation in trendy districts and consequently also viewed disparagingly as a fashion drink for yuppies and sarcastically as a symbol and accompanying drink of gentrification processes ; Stereotypes that are caricatured by cabaret artists such as Rainald Grebe and Philip Tägert or in the musical Mama Macchiato . Affected districts are often referred to as “Latte macchiato districts” or “Latte macchiato neighborhoods ” in this context .

Under the designation "Latte macchiato parents" or especially "Latte macchiato mothers", trend and future researchers define a target group relevant to the market economy who would like to integrate a consciously urban lifestyle into family life.
