history

The company was founded in 1981 by Sergio Zappella and Arthur Schmed. The name Saeco is derived from Sergio Arthur e compagnia . Schmed developed the first fully automatic coffee machine in 1985 and, among other things, patented the removable brewing group .

In 1987, the brothers Markus and Bernhard Bihler founded Saeco GmbH in Germany, and Saeco Austria followed in 1991. The Saeco Group grew into a leading company with a very strong international focus. There are now 16 subsidiaries in the USA, Latin America, Asia, Australia and Europe and thus a sales network in more than 60 countries.

In 1999 Saeco bought the Italian company Gaggia , whose focus is still today on the manufacture of espresso machines .

In 2004 Saeco was bought by the financial investor PAI partners . The company's value at the time was 746 million euros. After the sale, Saeco got into financial difficulties. The volume of business fell from 526 million euros in the 2005/2006 financial year to 318 million euros in sales in the 2008/2009 financial year. In 2007 a credit-financed special dividend was paid; the interest payments on the excessive loan financing, which was estimated at around 500 million euros, could no longer be met in 2008. In June 2009 Saeco was finally bought by the Dutch electronics company Philips for around 200 million euros.

On February 8, 2010, it was announced that Philips would close the locations in Munich (Germany), Lustenau (Austria) and Brunn am Gebirge (Austria). The service and technology areas in Eigeltingen (Germany) on Lake Constance were also affected by the closure . Only the commercial area Vending & Professional will in future be managed exclusively from the Eigeltingen location. A total of around 200 employees in Germany and Austria were affected by the closure. Since May 2010, all activities have been handled by the sales and marketing organization of the Philips Consumer Lifestyle division in Hamburg and Vienna . Since the merger of the two companies, the company's headquarters have remained in Gaggio Montana.

Since September 2010, Saeco products have been marketed under the brand name Philips Saeco . But in mid-2013 they returned to marketing under the name "Saeco" alone.

In June 2013, Tchibo announced that the company would in future be working with Saeco on the development and marketing of machines for the Tchibo Cafissimo system.

Product range

Saeco is particularly known for its espresso machines and fully automatic coffee machines. Other devices such as irons , ironing stations and air conditioners are no longer sold. According to the company in the 2008/2009 catalog, more than 750,000 fully automatic coffee machines were sold in 2007 alone. Unlike its competitor Jura Elektroapparate , Saeco offers not only high-priced devices but also fully automatic coffee machines in the lower price range.

Saeco recently launched the fully automatic coffee machine series Minuto, Moltio and GranBaristo. In addition to a new, narrower design, these products offer more choice of drinks and - for the higher-priced models - improved milk frothing and replaceable bean containers.

In September 2013 Saeco presented the GranBaristo Avanti fully automatic coffee machine with bluetooth at the IFA . This can be controlled remotely via tablet.

Sponsorship

In Germany, the name Saeco is also known through cycling : Up until 2004 , Saeco sponsored a successful professional team there , in which the German cyclist Jörg Ludewig rode.
