Gaggia is an Italian manufacturer of household appliances , in particular coffee and espresso machines . The product range includes espresso machines for private and professional use, fully automatic coffee machines , coffee pod systems and coffee grinders .

history

Giovanni Achille Gaggia applied for a patent in 1938 for a piston system that enabled him to force water under pressure through coffee powder. The result was an espresso with a frothy crown, the so-called crema . Gaggia first used the process in his café-bar in Milan .

It was not until 1948 that he founded the company of the same name, which initially only manufactured espresso machines for professional use. In 1977 the product portfolio was expanded to include devices for private households, which is also the core business today. In 1999, the Italian fully automatic coffee maker Saeco acquired a 60% majority in Gaggia, and Saeco (and thus Gaggia) has been part of the Philips Group since July 2009 .
