Maracon is 843 m above sea level. M. , 4 km east- south- east of Oron-la-Ville and 19 km east of the canton capital Lausanne (linear distance). The farming village extends from a promising location on a knoll above the Broye valley , in the eastern edge of the Vaud Central Plateau .
The area of the 4.4 km² municipal area covers a section of the Molasse hill country in the Alpine foothills. The border to the southeast is formed by the upper reaches of the Broye, which over time has created a small notch valley in the molasse layers . From the Broye, the municipality extends northward over a wide, gradually sloping ridge to the west (up to 883 m above sea level and thus the highest point of Maracon) into the valley of the Mionne . In the far northeast, in the former municipality of La Rogivue, is the moorland and marshland area of Les Mosses . history
Maracon was first mentioned in a document in 1236 under the name Montimarascon , derived from the Latin words mons (mountain) and mariscum (swamp, moor). Later the names Morascon (1287), Monracot (1290) and Montracot (1292) appeared.
In the Middle Ages, part of Maracon belonged to the Palézieux dominion, the other part to the Champion family. This sold its share to Bern in 1547. After the conquest of Vaud by Bern, the village came to the Bernese bailiwick of Oron in 1557. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Maracon belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic , which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Oron district. In 1872, the hamlet of Very located on the outskirts of Ecoteaux and the former castle came to the municipality of Maracon. On January 1st, 2003 the formerly independent La Rogivue was incorporated into Maracon.
