The population of Remaufens was 411 in 1900. During the 20th century, the population hovered between 410 and 470 people until 1970. Since then a significant increase in population has been recorded.

economy

Remaufens was a predominantly agricultural village until the second half of the 20th century . In the past, several mills were operated by the water power of the Tatrel. Even today, livestock and dairy farming and, to a lesser extent, arable farming play an important role in the income structure of the population. Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector, including a company that manufactures agricultural machinery. In the last few decades the village has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in Châtel-Saint-Denis and the Vevey-Montreux region.

traffic

The community is very well developed in terms of transport. It is located near the road from Châtel-Saint-Denis to Oron-la-Ville . The next connection to the A12 motorway , which has been open continuously from Bern to Vevey since 1981, is around 4 km from the town center. On April 29, 1901, the narrow-gauge railway line from Palézieux-Gare to Châtel-Saint-Denis was opened with two stops at Remaufens.

history

The area of Remaufens was probably already settled in Roman times. Several stone slab graves date from the Merovingian period . The place was first mentioned in a document in the 13th century under the name Romulfens . The names Remofens , Remoufens (1309), Remuffens (1367), Remouffens (1462), Roudmonffens (1584) and Rémaufens (1808) appeared later . The place name is derived from the Burgundian personal name Hrômulf and means with the suffix -ens as much as for the people of Hrômulf .

In the Middle Ages , Remaufens first belonged to the Fruence lordship. When this came under the direct rule of the House of Savoy in 1296, the village came as a fief to the Lords of Bossonnens. In 1513 Remaufens came under the rule of Freiburg and in 1536 was assigned to the area of the later Bailiwick Châtel-Saint-Denis. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), the village belonged to what was then the Châtel-Saint-Denis district during the Helvetic and the following period before being incorporated into the Veveyse district in 1848. In the years 1896 and 1910, numerous houses were badly damaged in village fires.

Attractions

The Saint-Maurice chapel was built in 1416. After Remaufens had become its own parish in 1835 (previously part of the parish of Attalens), the new parish church was inaugurated in 1843.
