geography

Le Flon is around 16 km north of Vevey (as the crow flies). The municipality extends on the ridge between the valleys of the Flon in the south and its right side stream Maflon in the north, in the extreme southwest of the Freiburg Central Plateau .

The 9.5 km² municipal area covers a section of the Molasse plateau east of the upper reaches of the Broye , in the foothills of the Alps. The area is crossed from northeast to southwest by the Flon lowland. The left slope of the valley with the Bois du Riez forest area also largely belongs to Le Flon. To the north of the valley there is a ridge that forms the main settlement area of the municipality and culminates on the forest heights of La Râpe ( 888  m above sea level ) and La Tossaire (at 942  m above sea level, the highest elevation of Le Flon). The Glâne rises on the northern slope of these two heights . To the northwest, the municipality extends into the valley basin of the Maflon . The ridge gradually flattens to the southwest and ends at the mouth of the Maflon in the Flon, where at 700  m above sea level. M. the lowest point of the parish is located. A small exclave is located in a moorland north of Fiaugères. In 1997, 5% of the municipal area was in settlements, 20% in forests and woodlands, 74% in agriculture and a little less than 1% was unproductive land.

Le Flon consists of the villages

  • Bouloz , 865  m above sea level M. , on the ridge between the Flon and the headwaters of the Glâne, 270 inhabitants.
  • Pont (Veveyse) , 750  m above sea level M. , in the valley of the Flon, 186 inhabitants.
  • Porsel , 813  m above sea level M. , on the ridge between the Flon and the Maflon, 406 inhabitants.

Le Flon also includes the hamlets of Les Grandes-Bruyères ( 865  m above sea level ) near Bouloz, Perrey-Martin ( 803  m above sea level ) on the ridge above Pont (Veveyse) as well as numerous individual farms scattered across the area . Neighboring municipalities of Le Flon are Chapelle (Glâne) , Rue , Ursy , Siviriez , Vuisternens-devant-Romont , La Verrerie and Saint-Martin in the canton of Friborg and Oron in the canton of Vaud .

population

With 1208 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Le Flon is one of the smaller communities in the canton of Friborg. 95.3% of the residents are French-speaking, 2.4% German-speaking and 0.8% speak Portuguese (as of 2000). The population of Le Flon was 730 in 1900. After the population had risen to 808 by 1930, a clear decrease of more than 25% to 602 inhabitants was registered by 1980. Since then, the population has increased significantly again.

economy

Until the second half of the 20th century, Le Flon was predominantly an agricultural village. Even today, livestock and dairy farming and, to a lesser extent, arable farming play an important role in the income structure of the population. Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector, including in wood processing, cheese production, construction, IT and the manufacture of agricultural machinery. In the last few decades, Le Flon has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in the regions of Oron-la-Ville and Châtel-Saint-Denis as well as in Romont .

traffic

The community is located on the main road from Romont to Oron-la-Ville . All three villages of Le Flon are connected to the public transport network by a bus from the Transports publics fribourgeois , which runs from Romont via Oron-la-Ville to Palézieux-Gare . Another bus line connects Porsel with Moudon .

history

The municipality of Le Flon was settled very early. Traces from the Middle Bronze Age and remains of a Roman settlement were found near Porsel .

Since the Middle Ages , parts of today's municipality belonged to the Oron rule, while the Haut-Crêt Abbey also had rich property. The Illens family maintained a castle near the mouth of the Maflon in the Flon since the 12th century, which made them the center of a small lordship. During the 16th century, the area came under the rule of Freiburg and was assigned to the Vogtei Rue. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), the villages belonged to what was then the Rue district during the Helvetic and the following period, before being incorporated into the Veveyse district in 1848.

In the context of the municipal mergers promoted by the canton of Friborg since 2000, the voters of Porsel , Bouloz and Pont (Veveyse) voted on June 10, 2003 with a yes majority of 91.7% in favor of merging their municipalities. With effect from January 1, 2004, the municipality of Le Flon was created, which was named after the stream Flon, which crossed all three previous municipal areas. The municipal administration is located in Bouloz, while Porsel is the seat of the parish.
