history

Old coat of arms of Vuisternens-devant-Romont

The place was first mentioned in a document in 929 under the name Winterningis . Later the names Wisternegus (in the 12th century), Wistarnens (1198) and Wisternens (1453) appeared. The origin of the place name is not clearly established. Vuisternens probably goes back to the personal name Winitarn and means with the suffix -ens as much as with the people of Winitarn. Other sources consider a derivation from the Germanic word ventru (winter) possible.

Vuisternens formed its own rule since the Middle Ages , which came under the influence of the Counts of Savoy after 1270 . When the Bernese conquered Vaud in 1536, Vuisternens-devant-Romont came under the rule of Friborg and was assigned to the Bailiwick of Romont. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), the village was part of the Romont district during the Helvetic and the following period. The southernmost parts of the municipality with Lieffrens, Les Ecasseys and La Joux, on the other hand, were under the rulership of Rue , from 1536 to the Bailiwick and from 1798 to the Rue district. With the new cantonal constitution of 1848, the previous districts of Romont and Rue merged into the new district of Glâne.

As part of the community mergers funded by the canton of Friborg since 2000, a merger of Vuisternens-devant-Romont with the surrounding small communities was prepared. After the residents of all municipalities approved the merger in 2002 with a majority of 75% on average, the previously politically independent municipalities of Estévenens , Villariaz , Lieffrens , Sommentier , Les Ecasseys , La Magne and La Joux became Vuisternens on January 1, 2003 -devant-Romont merged. A year later, on January 1, 2004, La Neirigue was incorporated . With this merger, the entire community received a new coat of arms.
